Suspicious mole

I have a mole on my chest that has darkened in colour and is an odd shape - though some what symmetrical.

I saw a GP about it though was advised to continue monitoring it and return if any further changes.

I just wondered if anyone has had a mole removed, what the process was? Did they take a biopsy first? Then remove surrounding tissue?

Not a mole, but I was referred recently by my GP on the two week wait pathway for a suspicious growth. Mine was what I thought was a cherry angioma initially, but it suddenly grew and looked odd. Had an appointment at hospital with a dermatologist and was then booked in to have it completely excised on 23rd July - no biopsy first, they just went for immediate full removal. They removed it along with a margin of skin around it. They said they were sure it has a haemangioma and nothing sinister, but that I’d get the results in 8-10 weeks. I actually got the results yesterday though and turns out it was a basal cell carcinoma. Nothing further to do though as it was removed successfully.

I think whether they decide on a biopsy or to go for immediate full removal really depends on the mole/growth and when I was reading up, it seems to vary from doctor to doctor.

I had a mole removed from my back years ago as it was catching on my bra strap - even though it wasn’t thought to be suspicious the whole thing was removed and tested. In my case it was superficial so was scraped off with a scalpel and cauterised (I had a local anaesthetic).
The testing came back clear.
