DF and I getting married soon and are having a DJ and dancing. We are both terrible dancers and am cringing at thought of first dance. Has anyone had any lessons for a first dance? Where they any good? Am in London area but all suggestions/shared experiences welcome. Am planning on making it a short song!

Yes..we did..because we are not good at dancing, other than pogoeing around drunkenly at gigs, and we were dreading it.We didnt do anything complicated..we just needed basic steps and we really enjoyed it in the end..plus it was a good way to lose weight to fit into frock..
My advice though-dont do anything too much like a huge routine..we went to a wedding where the couple had divised this complex routine that wouldnt have looked out of place on a West End stage and it was all a bit cringeworthy! There were Jazz hands and everything!

Hahaha - thanks Scootermum. Yes, that's just what we're looking for, some basic steps. I have been known to dance in the past but only after huge amounts of alcohol and it's not pretty and that is def not going to happen at the wedding. We just want to feel a bit confident about not looking like total losers/morons!

we didn't (probably should have!) but some friends of ours surprised EVERYONE with learning a full on disco routine for their first dance - no one knew about it and it was brilliant and HILARIOUS in a good way!! Especially as they actually did it well (was a revelation about the bloke being able to dance!). If you have the guts for that i was recommend it..

Oooh - nooooo - too scared - just doing a little jig around the floor would be miraculous for me. Wish I had the confidence to go all out like that though - I love to be the centre of attention at times but not when it's "forced" on me iykwim... And also there's my total and DF's partial lack of co-ordination...

We had lessons -- basically just slow-slow-quick-quick-slow-ing around the dance floor, managing to turn relatively gracefully. We had a lovely but slightly mad American teacher named Patsy. It was eight years ago now, so don't know whether she's still teaching, but she used to hire a studio at Dance Attic near Fulham Broadway.

Wedding Thriller is fab :D

yelpol · 27/05/2008 14:21

Oh yes, PortandLemon, that just about sounds like something we could cope with. NutterlyUts - imagine just the bride doing that dance - that would be many times better than me sans lessons (and many glasses of wine)!

My dh and I took a few waltz lessons before our wedding. (We were having a ceilidh band).

My advice to you, if you are going to do something similar, would be to arrange for your DJ/band to play you a preview of exactly what music they will play on the night.

DH and I managed to waltz perfectly well during the lessons but on the night it was a disaster because the band played a number that was far too fast (we hadn't picked a specific tune or song) and we couldn't keep up.

My other piece of advice, if you take lessons, is DON'T TELL ANYONE YOU ARE DOING IT. That way, if you suck, like we did, they won't think that your lessons must have been wasted

God, do people really do that? I ran a mile from the idea - it would be my absolute worst nightmare.
