Will my 1 year old catch chicken pox?

My 1 year old was around her cousins 2 days ago and they were kissing and cuddling her. We was at their house for around 6 hours
Her cousins woke up today with chicken pox. Will my daughter definitely catch it? 😩

There's no definites but chickenpox is contagious for 1-2 days before spots appear so it might be quite likely that she catches it. The incubation period is 10-21 days so you won't know for a while whether she has caught it

i am just waiting for my 15 month old to come down with it, we met up with a friend and her 12 month old on Thursday and Saturday she came down with chicken pox, my little boy is really snotty today and out of sorts so think it is the beginning

Burntt · 14/07/2025 20:47

You can’t know for sure. They are contagious 2 days before spots appear so you are right on the cusp.

try not to stress for most kids it’s very mild especially when so young. Whatever you do do not give nurophen however as ibuprofen is really bad with chicken pox. Stick to paracetamol products like calpol and creams to ease the itch

@Emonade it won't come out as fast as that as the incubation period is 10-21 days

There's some evidence that if you vaccinate within 3 days of contact it reduces the risk.
Worth getting it anyway. Chickenpox can be very unpleasant for some children.

gamerchick · 14/07/2025 20:51

Very possibly OP. There are creams you can get now. Just don't use calamine or give Ibuprofen. I don't know if they can have antihistamines at that age though.

Mamaprima · 14/07/2025 20:58

Probably yes, she will. To reassure you, my son caught it at 13 months from nursery and it didn't bother him at all (he had the spots and mild fever). In comparison, my eldest son suffered much more (caught it from the youngest).

@Emonade (sorry, won't let me delete the @)

1 year olds can have piriton antihistamine

Helpmechooseausername · 14/07/2025 21:07

Please try not to worry if he does get it, it's usually mild in young children.

Some people have chicken pox parties where they invite everyone over if their DC have it, so that everyone gets it over and done with all young as possible!!

Falishia1990 · 14/07/2025 21:07

Right so I probably won’t know for sure until back end of next week then.of she does get it I’ll just give her calpol. What are the best creams to use? Her cousins who have got the chicken pox this is their second time having it 😬 I didnt know you could get it more than once!

Its not a definite at all.

My DD has been around several children with chicken pox and through 2 nursery outbreaks and is still yet to catch it.

My friends DD was around my DS for a whole weekend (staying over 2 nights) sharing pools and playing/cuddling etc (my DS was fully in the middle of chicken pox) and she didn't catch it.

dementedpixie · 14/07/2025 21:10

You wouldn't usually get chickenpox more than once unless it wasn't chickenpox the last time or isn't chickenpox this time.

Poxclin and virasoothe are supposed to be good. I've used aqueous calamine cream for my kids years ago. Oats or bicarbonate of soda supposed to be good in the bath

@dementedpixie

They went to the doctors this morning and the doctor confirmed it was Chicken Pox.
