Your thoughts on this idea for teh School summer fete please?

I am about to qualify as a Personal Trainer so we thought it would be fun to make some money for the school and promote me at the same time.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on these ideas. All money raised goes to the school and all prizes are donated by me.

  1. pay 50p to guess how many press ups I did in 60 seconds. Closest guess at the end of the day wins a free personal training session or nutrition assessment worth £35.
  1. pay 50p to have a go at doing as many press ups as possible in 60 seconds. Person with the highest score at the end of the day wins a free personal training session or nutrition assessment worth £35.
  1. I'm going to have 3 or 4 food items on show. Pay 50p to guess the fat/carbohydrate/protein content of each item. Person with the closest guesses wins a free personal training session or nutrition assessment worth £35.

Your honest thoughts please. I am very open to negative comments and promise not to go off in a huff

No. 2 souds best to me.

The food one is too hard for people who aren't food obsessives, and if you were doing the press-ups, you have to keep doing them again through the day, as different people arrived, so how would you chose the winner?

NotABanana · 23/05/2008 14:08

I thought you were suggesting you do all three, and I would have said yes, but missblythe has a point about the press ups you can do in a minute. Were you thinking of a doing 5-10 each time someone entered to give them a clue?

mckenzie · 23/05/2008 14:14

sorry girls, I didn't explain properly. i will have done the press ups already with a reliable witness (probably my Tutor). And yes, i do plan on doing all three options.

Perhpas I could change the food one to just putting the dishes in order of highest/lowest fat content? Or which one is the most healthy? or guess the calorific value of a dish?

I think people will struggle with guess the calorie but would have a go at putting things in order from healthiest to non healthiest.

ivykaty44 · 23/05/2008 14:21

Number 2 - the person who can do the most press ups in 60 seconds - they dont need a personel trainer, its the one that does the least that needs the personel trainer??

MummyDoIt · 23/05/2008 14:21

With the food one, I'd just go for a selection of items and you have to put them in order of calorific value. Have some 'trick' ones like avocado which (if I remember rightly) you'd think would be low in calories and very healthy but are actually highish.

mckenzie · 24/05/2008 07:04

Thanks for the replies.
I can't make the food one just putting it in order highest to lowest etc I've just realised as I would have too many winners. Unless I can come up with another prize that I can have lots of. I really need it to be a 'one winner' competition.

Re the sit ups ivykaty44, I totally take on board what you are saying but I can't really offer the prize to the person who comes last .

Thanks for all the ideas/comments - please keep them coming as they are very helpful.

re the 50p entry fee - do you think that's about right? I cant rememeber the price of similar competitions from last year (ie guess the name of the teddy).

TIA

I don't like the idea of number 1 - it's a bit .... self-aggrandising and number 3 isn't a very fun game for a fete, more like a school lesson. Number 2 is a great idea though, maybe you could do other things besides pressups which could be hard for a child, star jumps or something?

seeker · 24/05/2008 07:48

I would be a bit bothered about number 3 if it's a primary school in particular. Remember that children's nutritional needs are very different from adults, and I don't like the idea of children rating food like this.

cupsoftea · 24/05/2008 07:50

Number 2 sounds great.

Could you sell fruit as well? or make pressed orange juice? or something like that?

Morethanmum · 24/05/2008 07:58

Couldn't people guess how many you could do, and then you do it at the end, when they do the raffle etc? Then they can all watch...

mckenzie · 24/05/2008 08:13

Branflake1 - I guess that's part of the idea. In exchange for me running the stall and offering the prizes out of my pocket I get a bit of publicity. People tend to choose a personal trainer who they see looking like they would like to look or doing things that they might like to do or doing things that they are impressed by.

I should have said that this stall is geared more at the adults rather than the children - it is going to be next to the Gladiators event (which is for the children) although I still completely take on board what you are saying Seeker. DS is in year 2 and they have done quite bit this year about foods that are protein, food s that are carbohydrate etc so perhaps (if i could think of a suitable prize that I can provie loads of) do a competition for the children where they have to tell me if the food item is mainly carbohydrate, protein, or fat etc.

Morethanmum - I thought of that but decided against it as 1) I'd probably be too nervous in front of everybody and 2)the raffle is done at the very end of the day so most people, apart from those clearing up etc, have already gone home.

dress up as sportacus for the day to increase interest

mckenzie · 24/05/2008 08:45

someone else (in RL) had suggested a bit of a costume chamaeleon. I think I will seriously think about it - off to check out Lazy Town website and see what Sportacus is wearing these days!
Is there a similar character that the slightly older children would be more familiar with I wonder? Lazy Town is just Cbeebies isn't it?

Could you give a discount to everyone that enters the pressup challenge - thus helping those that do come last to come and see you for some personel training?

Say a 20% (6 sessions for the price of 5) discount would get me interested enough to actually take part in the challenge and then come and use you as a personel trainer afterwards to improve my fitness.

mckenzie · 25/05/2008 20:54

good idea ivykaty44 - thanks fpor that.
