Hi all,

So, we are invited to our daughter’s boyfriend’s mum’s 60th birthday party at a venue. They have been friends since year 8-9 and we also socialised with his parents a few times - they invited us for a dinner at theirs and we returned hosting too! I also worked with his dad at the same company some years ago. Her birthday is in July; and I have no idea what to get her. I would always love a fancy afternoon tea for example- do you think this would be a good idea like Claridges or similar afternoon tea or flowers and drinks?
Look forward to some ideas

Many thanks ☺️

Claridges is a lovely venue. Fortnums is also classic. The savoy is a lovely treat too. I think it’s a lovely gift as it is something you wouldn’t buy for yourself.

milliemummy87 · 09/05/2025 22:22

An afternoon tea at a nice venue would be perfect.

Molly1418 · 09/05/2025 22:24

That’s what I think- I would love that present myself☺️ thanks ladies

Tea at Claridges or a nice massage at the Manderin Oriental.

Molly1418 · 11/05/2025 16:15

Well…asked my daughter to ask her bf if afternoon tea is something she would like as they are not cheap and I don’t have too much to spare really but still want to give her a nice present, anyways he said ‘probably not’ the boys are being useless but indicated that she wouldn’t like it- my question still exists - what else?

Personalised bottle of champagne from Fortnum’s (£55ish) and 2 nice champagne glasses? You can get those personalised online for not too much money. I use this firm - reliable and quick in terms of delivery

NewAgeNewMe · 12/05/2025 07:23

Would they like something like a National Trust or RHS membership?

AlwaysFreezing · 12/05/2025 07:25

A standard rose in a pot from David Austin?

Mmmkaay · 12/05/2025 07:26

How long has your daughter been with her bf and are they likely to last?! I think you're going overboard if you haven't got that much spare cash yourself - unless you think it's going to be a long term thing. In which case, take her out for tea and get to know her better!

Westfacing · 12/05/2025 07:36

You say you don't have too much to spare so I'd re-think tea at Claridges - tea at such places is around £100 per head!

I'd settle for a decent bouquet of flowers or as mentioned above a personalised bottle of Champagne.

EleanorReally · 12/05/2025 07:37

you can get a nice gift from Fortnum and Mason

EleanorReally · 12/05/2025 07:37

or a garden voucher

CrotchetyQuaver · 12/05/2025 07:44

I am 60
its really not that old
i wouldn't be that pleased with any of that offerings proposed, which sound quite expensive (but I would act pleased and be grateful to the giver)
Just speak to your daughter and see what she suggests. I didn't want any gifts for my 60th, but of course some always feel obliged and nice bottles of wine are usually a good bet even with occasional drinkers like me!

NewAgeNewMe · 12/05/2025 07:48

I’m also 60 and love the sound of all those gifts. But I’m a massive champagne drinker and afternoon tea has to have champagne.

Aspinall used to have nice gifts at a reasonable price and if not personalised can be returned

SemmaLina · 12/05/2025 07:53

For my 60th I had …
flowers ,
soap ( posh soap , I am known for my love of soap )
bee necklace
hamper from Fortnums ( you can choose the size of hamper , then add the goodies you like from the food hall )

it all depends on your budget , don’t go mad and spend too much

Imtoooldforallthis · 12/05/2025 07:57

I was going to say soap, something like Chanel.

BeepBoopBop · 12/05/2025 07:58

I’m 61 - it’s not old FFS.

Rose champagne - no glasses tah
Big bunch of flowers - bigger the better
Case of red wine
New pair of Oakley flight deck goggles - low light pink
Sweaty Betty gift voucher
Ivy voucher (I know, but most people have one within striking distance)
Artisan gin
Belvedere vodka
Car valet voucher

Good gifting is not based on age & sex, but personality & interests. I’m semi-sporty and like the occasional alcoholic beverage.

Westfacing · 12/05/2025 08:06

I’m 61 - it’s not old FFS.

No one has said it's old!

NewAgeNewMe · 12/05/2025 08:10

A key ring from Aspinal as an example is £45 so not break the bank & can be returned. Mulberry obviously more expensive also does key rings if not wanting champagne etc

chanel vanity mirror is also reasonably priced.

But there are other more push the boat out options, a aspinal make up bag I think starts at £120 or thereabouts.

gingercat02 · 12/05/2025 08:13

I'm not 60 yet but not far off.
Personalised stuff is tacky and unnecessarily expensive. If she drinks fizz she will already have glasses. A bottle of good champagne is a great gift if she likes it. Not so much if she is happy with prosecco.
I like a good afternoon tea
Quality toiletries
Perfume
Big bouquet of flowers
Voucher for a favourite restaurant
Tickets for a show
Cinema season ticket

bigknitblanket · 12/05/2025 08:13

Depends what she likes. I’d be perfectly happy with a lovely bunch of flowers or bottle of my favourite gin/wine (does her son not know if/what she drinks?)
I think I’d feel it was a bit OTT for someone to buy me afternoon tea at claridges unless it was someone very close to me as it’s so expensive.

Thisismyalterego · 12/05/2025 08:18

One of my favourite gifts was a personalised bottle of my favourite perfume. I know it wasn't cheap but it is a beautiful glass bottle and also included a small glass bottle atomiser with the funnel etc to refill to keep in my handbag.

EmpressOfTheThread · 12/05/2025 08:23

I'm 65. I really dislike "afternoon tea", it's something I wouldn't enjoy. I'm teetotal so always just give away the booze I'm given.
I think you have to get to know the woman a bit. If you could find out their favourite perfume or authors, that would be a start.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/05/2025 08:24

I'm 61 and I would always be happy to receive a bottle of champagne.
