Underbite in a 9 year old

Hello!
My 9 year old son has been referred to the orthodontist, he had his first appointment this week and has a severe underbite. The orthodontist did his checks, measurements, took photos and X-rays/scans. We have got to go back in 9 days time. The orthodontist mentioned a palate expander, block braces and fixed braces but would have a look at scans/X-rays and decide which would be best to start with.
I guess I just want to know if anybody’s child has had orthodontic treatment for overbite and what they had.
My son also plays rugby so if any of your children had any of the above treatments and played whether they needed a special gum shield or if they could just use a normal one (if the braces weren’t removable).

My son had significant overbite and not all adult teeth came thru at an older age than your son, about 13/14 when he started treatment with block brace. Now 17 and getting there, overbite corrected really well, teeth pushed into alignment , some teeth built up to make normal size, and at stage if preparing for bridge where gap is. All under orthodontist and restorative dentistry on NHS. It’s a long slog but son seems to just get on with it and confidence really increased. Compliance is key, esp with block braces at the start because they seem so big and awkward, best of luck!
