Hello!
My 9 year old son has been referred to the orthodontist, he had his first appointment this week and has a severe underbite. The orthodontist did his checks, measurements, took photos and X-rays/scans. We have got to go back in 9 days time. The orthodontist mentioned a palate expander, block braces and fixed braces but would have a look at scans/X-rays and decide which would be best to start with.
I guess I just want to know if anybody’s child has had orthodontic treatment for overbite and what they had.
My son also plays rugby so if any of your children had any of the above treatments and played whether they needed a special gum shield or if they could just use a normal one (if the braces weren’t removable).

How is treatment going for your son @Mummyto1plustwinsMy 7yo has just been referred for an underbite. I’m panicking as the dentist mentioned surgery may be needed in the future. I know this is a long way off with other options available first though.

My son had an underbite. He had braces just before his 16th birthday (they didn’t want to do it earlier, as apparently his jaw had to have developed enough), and he still has those braces over 2 years later. But - no underbite any more - and the braces must be about to come off. Don’t panic just yet x

My son had a class VI underbite and started with a palate expander aged 6. It’s been very successful and his teeth look great and the shape of his jaw and face have changed. His speech is much better too. Happy to PM if helpful.

Yes please @Twilightstarbright

Im feeling so worried for him. It’s quite a significant underbite so I knew he would need treatment, but now it’s starting im feeling anxious. There isn’t much online about it (in the uk) despite it being relatively common, so I would definitely be interested to see how it worked for your son.

I agree, all the mainstream dentists shrugged and said yeah DS will need surgery as a late teen but German trained orthodontists take a very different approach and treat from 3/4. It was having a significant impact on DS in terms of speech, lip seal, dribbling and chewing food so we took action. We were incredibly fortunate our Bupa dental insurance covered some of it as it was so severe but we’ve had to pay ourselves. Happy for you to PM me.
