Kitchen Advice Please

Well, mortgage has been approved and builder has been booked for the extension. We now have to go shopping this weekend for a kitchen while hopefully the January sales are still running! Problem is, I'm not really sure what to look for so was hoping for some advice from any new kitchen veterans.

Budget is limited but then so is space (won't be huge, but will be much more useable than it is now).

Thoughts for what I want out of the kitchen is: decent big fridge/freezer, sink with a waste disposal unit (either a 1.5 sink or double depending on how it plans out), light colours to make the room look bigger, wine rack, some sort of lockable cupboard for under the sink stuff, telescopic towel holder somewhere, easy clean surfaces, LOTS of cupboard space, space for a decent sized kitchen bin.

What other considerations should I be thinking of. No idea of types of flooring (in the budget range - easy to clean priority!). Don't know anything about worksurfaces and what the differences are. Generally want a clean, modern look without too many things on show (like to hide all the manky kitchen equipment that isn't going to get replaced for years!!!)

Primarily going to look in MFI, B&Q and Wicks... we won't be using fitters, the builder will install. Just generally fishing for advice on what sort of things I need to check/ask/be aware of so I don't just accept whatever some kitchen designer tells me I need!

Our kitchen is from Howdens and is brilliant and excellent price They are actually MFI kitchens but not a huge range. We have flat cupboard doors and steel handles and solid wood surfaces butchers block freestanding from habitat(very useful) and a grey slate floorDef recommend howdens as they are not flat pack but factory glued and come fullt assemble and v strong Go for a ss sink they are easy to look after White ceramic is totally impractical but looks lovely

noddyholder · 15/01/2005 18:55

THAT IS THE ONE WE have it is available from howdens in 4 colours at 60% off mfi price if your builder has an account there (sorry about the capitals)

Casmie · 15/01/2005 19:21

My only reservations I have about Howdens is that one of the people we visited as a reference for a different builder catagorically DIDN'T recommend Howdens (whereas they raved about the builder) as the whole order had been a bit farcical - they said that nothing seemed "square" and it was a hell of a job installing it all. Have been a bit wary since - but it does seem like the majority of people have a good experience with them, so maybe we'll take a look after all...

QUICK QUESTION - have just seen a sink I love but it's a mix of quartz rock particles and acrylic. I would want the dark grey & chrome one. Having had a plastic white sink which stains horribly and is a pain to keep clean, is this going to be the same problem? Or will it stay looking nice?

JanH · 16/01/2005 14:00

Casmie, I think that's what mine is (can't remember brand but quartz or granite or something came into it) and as I said it is very used looking - but it is white. A grey one would probably still look OK I think.

Mind you mine has got a few little pits in the bottom too...it was supposed to be v hardwearing but it has definitely suffered.

Cleaning with eg Cif was recommended for mine.

Ameriscot2005 · 16/01/2005 14:05

Waste disposals are ace! I wouldn't be without one (have had one for 18 years!).

Our old one died just before Christmas and we were without one for 24 painful hours, LOL. But it was very easy to fit a new one. I could have easily done it myself, but guilted hubby into doing it. It took about 20 minutes to remove the old one and replace it with the new (same brand, so everything fitted nicely).

Casmie · 16/01/2005 14:06

Hmm... might stick with the stainless steel then if it has a tendency to chip. Dh isn't exactly careful and I predict paint stains on it within weeks of installation ANYWAY... sigh

Ameriscot: I have to admit, I really do miss the one from my old house even though it was an ancient big hulking thing. Interesting to know it is fairly simple to replace it if it does go wrong...

OP posts:
JanH · 16/01/2005 14:08

Oh, paint comes off OK (I happen to know...)

It's not exactly chipped - just not as smooth as it used to be. But you do know where you are with stainless steel.

Ameriscot2005 · 16/01/2005 14:09

We have a (cheapish) Magnet kitchen that we installed in 1997 (which included 4 years of student-type tenants). There are very few signs of wear and the basic construction is still very solid.

When we do get round to updating it, I imagine we will just replace doors and worktops - but it will be fine for a few years yet.

Prettybird · 16/01/2005 14:13

If it is an acrylic sink with any type of quartz in it (eg an Asterite sink), you should aboslutely not clean it with anything abrasive (including Cif). A qucik blast of belach would be best.

The reason is that the quarts is so hard that the Cif wears away the acrylic around the pieces of quartz, then making it easier for the grime to cllect so it looks dirty even more quickly.

I put a white Asterite sink in a previous house and it never looked bad - parlty because I knew from the start how to clean. How did I know? I worked for the company that made Asterite and was actually Product Manager for its "sister" (which was simialr to Corian).

Prettybird · 16/01/2005 14:14

Oops - lots of typos - but I think it is readable!

DissLocated · 16/01/2005 14:45

Can I just say DON'T DON'T DON'T use MFI!! Won't go into detail as will be here all afternoon and my blood pressure will go through the roof. We used them for our kitchen and bathroom (why? why? why?, we were FOOLS!) Both were very stressful experiences, both took 6 months from purchase to being finished, the finish on both is not up to scratch either.

JanH · 16/01/2005 14:56

Prettybird, I can't remember the make of my sink - it wasn't Asterite, I think it was German and possibly began with an S, I have the leaflet somewhere - but it definitely said do clean with Cif, so if I shouldn't have really I am a bit miffed!

Casmie · 16/01/2005 16:06

Well just had a quote from Wickes... nicer units, not as nice accessories (in comparison to MFI one we like) but most importantly I think with flooring/tiling/fitting it's going to take us 1k over budget

DissLocated - we wouldn't be going with MFI's fitters but using our builder - would that make a difference to your tale of woe?

OP posts:
Casmie · 16/01/2005 16:32

Ideas for very cheap flooring that would still be easy to clean & maintain? Thinking get something down that's cheap and maybe replace in a couple of years when we have more money (read: leave for twenty years as there'll always be something better to spend the money on!!!)

JanH - I can't remember the names of the other brands - it is over 15 years since I was in the business.

What I do remember is that you had to be careful never to use anything abrasive. As such, Cif is one of the least abrasive of the "abrasive" cleaners (IFYSWIM) - but our own (ICI) research suggested that, with prolonged use, even that resulted in staining - hnece the advice to use bleach.

Fran1 · 16/01/2005 18:03

Casmie,

read my earlier message about MFI to answer your question! I didn't use their fitters either, still very unimpressed with the service.

But ..... it hasn't put me off so much that if i were to be doing another kitchen and the only one i liked was in MFI i would still buy it from them.

As with all these shops i think many people have bad experiences and many people have good. And i did kitchen in the end!!!

Casmie · 16/01/2005 18:09

oops... yes Fran - sorry, just reread!

Hmm... looks like we might be going with Wickes. The soft-close doors on the units are very tempting...

OP posts:
Casmie · 16/01/2005 18:10

(waits for the Wickes horror stories to surface... )

OP posts:
Fran1 · 16/01/2005 18:12

LOl thats meant to read i did get my kitchen in the end!!!

I didn't go insane and turn into one.

Yes let us know what quality service you get from Wickes!

Casmie · 17/01/2005 16:30

Well I got the quote from MFI and it was actually more expensive, so that's a no brainer. Wickes it is.

Mourning the loss of a linen effect stainless steel sink though (the Wickes one is positively boring in comparison) - don't even care about the differences in ovens, just the sinks - how sad is that?! Question, would it be really frivolous to spend 400+ quid on a sink buying it elsewhere and just getting the rest from Wickes?

Ideally, you should all post about how crap linen effect stainless steel is and how terrible it is to clean so I feel better...

OP posts:
jampots · 17/01/2005 16:33

get the sink you like Casmie - second best is no good especially for a woman of your calibre

CarrieG · 17/01/2005 16:35

£400 for a sink! Does it do the washing up itself & then bring you a cuppa?!

Seriously, if you love it go for it...I'm coveting a big square Belfast style one myself...
