Can I wear this dress to a wedding?

hippopandamouse · 04/04/2025 12:02

Is this a suitable dress to wear as a wedding guest? I really love it but wondering if the sequins are too much maybe? I don’t want to look silly 🤣

It’s also sold as a bridesmaid dress, so wasn’t sure if it was too much for a guest to wear? Don’t want to tread on any toes in any sense.

Opinions please? :D

Nope to over the top , you will look like you are bitter about not being a bridesmaid

Umidontknow · 04/04/2025 17:04

Honestly it's lovely, if green is the bridesmaids colour I really don't think anyone would look at it and think you where trying to be a brides maid. I think its only because you said it was one tbh

Noodles1234 · 04/04/2025 17:07

Personally I wouldn’t, way too much like a bridesmaid dress and speaks “I want to be a bridesmaid”. However it is pretty.

SunshineAndFizz · 04/04/2025 17:14

PurplGirl · 04/04/2025 16:41

Why would she? The dresses are entirely different colours and styles.

Because it looks like a bridesmaid dress.

Doesn’t matter they’re different colours or styles, people have mix/match wedding parties all the time.

The style, the material, the length…it’s a bridesmaid dress.

ThatCatWitch · 04/04/2025 17:20

This is the actual dress us bridesmaids wore at my sister's wedding.

The style: full sequin bodice - not remotely bridesmaid style. You almost never see sequins on a bridesmaid dress.

The length: it’s a midaxi length - a relatively new length style of dress. Bridesmaids dresses are usually full length (maxi) or just below the knee. Not bridesmaidy.

The material: sequins or chiffon? Sequins - no. Chiffon - potentially - some bridesmaids dresses are chiffon, I’ll give you that. But most weddings I’ve been to lately have had half the female guests wearing chiffon - it’s fashionable atm.

Most dresses on ASOS and other fashion sites are just fashion dresses. They’re trying to increase sales. Nothing more.

MinnieCoops · 04/04/2025 17:24

Honestly no. You’ll stand out and not in a good way.

Mate, everything about it is bridemaid-y.

It’s sold as a bridesmaid dress. The model in the picture is holding a bouquet. There’s even someone on this thread who has this as their bridesmaid dress 😂

It's far too fancy for a wedding guest. It's more of a bridesmaid dress.

StephMD89 · 04/04/2025 17:35

I wouldn't because I've seen plenty of weddings where the bridesmaids wore this dress. It comes in other colours including green which i would be worried some other bridesmaid could wear. And to mirror what another poster said, sequins under the arms are awful - don't recommend!

Mate, it’s not bridesmaidy any more than any other formal wear test on that fashion website. Marketing. Don’t you want to elaborate on your style, length, material argument?

Giddykiddy · 04/04/2025 17:44

It's 100% a bridesmaid dress - please don't otherwise you'll look silly

Style: Sleeveless, fitted body that flares out from waist is something I see on bridesmaids a lot.

Material: floaty chiffon is very common for bridesmaids round these parts. Fair enough the sequins give it a more modern look.

Length: Chiffon at that length is particularly giving bridesmaid vibes. If it was above the knee it would feel much more informal.

anon2022anon · 04/04/2025 17:53

It's 100% a bridesmaid dress. I'm currently in several weddings groups on Facebook, and these regularly come up as 'weve got these bridesmaid dresses, what shoes/ flowers/ hair shall we do?'.
If you Google Maya deluxe bridesmaid dress, these will come up (along with the long/ halternecks/ v neck versions).
It's a bridesmaid dress.
What is it that you liked about it, so people can recommend other stuff?

Style: sounds like every occasion wear dress for summer.

Material: as I’ve said, chiffon v common for guests/occasion wear now.

Length: as I’ve said, midaxi is a very fashionable length atm. But I haven’t seen it in bridesmaids yet as wedding fashion tends to lag behind. As shown by the actual bridesmaids dress that has been chosen for this wedding.

the reason it’s cropping up on FB groups is bcos it’s ASOS and cheap. People use fashion sites more these days. It doesn’t make it any more of a bridesmaid dress than anything else on the site.

Except for the name of it, the colours of it (very typical bridesmaid colours at the minute), the fact that several complimentary styles are available to buy of the same dress for matching bridesmaids, including different lengths, necklines, maternity and childrens, the styling of it in pictures with a bouquet, and the fact that it's got sequins and chiffon in the same dress, which is quite unusual for a guest dress as that's quite full on. Apart from that there's nothing to distinguish it as a bridesmaid dress among many others on ASOS, sure.

The reason it's cropping up repeatedly on FB wedding groups is because it's a bridesmaid dress 😁

The name is marketing. It’s a cheap fast fashion brand - of course they’re going to push ‘bridesmaid’ in Spring during a cost of living crises. They probably ordered a tonne of those dresses in and couldn’t shift them any other way. Ordered are placed 1-2 seasons prior. So then the crowds follow and bit bcos they’re literally googling ‘bridesmaid dress’ and ASOS comes up top.

A colour is a colour. Every pastel shade is a potential bridesmaid dress. The actual bridesmaids dress is a completely different colour. Sone guests won’t know the actual bridesmaid colour and will turn up in that colour - Will they be accused of trying to be a bridesmaid?

Sequins are defo more guest than bridesmaid. I’ve never seen sequins on a bridesmaid dress. And this is full bodice. I’ve worn very similar dresses to this for charity balls, weddings and work awards nights.

Maya isn't an ASOS brand. It's a bridesmaid/ bridal/ occasion brand.
The picture is attached is from the bridesmaid part of the website, which has all the different variations of that dress available.

this link is to the occasion part of the website, which I would class a wedding guest outfit as. None of the variations of that dress are in the occasion section of their own website- they have multiple sequin dresses, and multiple chiffon dresses, however none of them seem to combine the two, and instead feature a lot more embroidery, flounce, etc.

If I saw you wearing the dress from the OP at an awards ceremony, I'd think that's a nice dress, but she's clearly been a bridesmaid at some point and reused it from her wardrobe.
If I saw you in it at a wedding, especially knowing your DD was a flower girl, I would think you were miffed you weren't a bridesmaid so decided to wear a bridesmaid dress anyway. It's unnecessary to wear things that might be mistaken as a bridesmaid at someone's wedding, it just shouts look at me.

anon2022anon · 04/04/2025 20:19

Sorry, picture here of the bridesmaid section, showing various different types of chiffon and sequin dresses. I'm sure you can look through and find the midi length. I agree it's not a common length nowadays, but the brand clearly carers for the same dress in several different cuts, so that you can co-ordinate several bridesmaids of different shapes and tastes from one place.

Can I wear this dress to a wedding?
Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 04/04/2025 20:21

My friend wore something very similar to my wedding and looked amazing! I’m planning on wearing sequins to hers!

Would you honestly think that? Yikes, I really hope I don’t ever bump into you at an event (wedding or otherwise) if you’re putting that much thought into everyone’s outfits. I just see a nice dress. An incredibly sparkly one that doesn’t scream bridesmaid because it’s a full bodice of sequins and that’s not typical of a bridesmaids dress at all (but absolutely cool if that’s what a couple chooses).

anon2022anon · 04/04/2025 20:25

Here's a random actual wedding photo, from the first page of googling sequin bridesmaid dresses. They're all wearing this make of dress, but in their wedding colour.
