Hi everyone,
Myself, fiancé and 13 month old are due to move to Derbyshire/Sheffield at the end of the summer. We currently live down south in Hampshire, and we wanted some opinions on where to live. We love the peaks, but also loved Matlock but then saw a thread that said it has a big drug problem?
We don’t know anyone who lives there so have no one to ask. Ideally we would like somewhere more countrysidey, little villages etc. We aren’t city people, and want our son to grow up in the countryside. Does anyone have any recommendations? Is Matlock a nice place to live?
TIA x

“Chesterfield is the most dangerous major townin Derbyshire, and is the 33rd most dangerous overall out of Derbyshire's 267 towns, villages, and cities.” https://crimerate.co.uk/derbyshire/chesterfield

@Pesk17from websites such as these. Again, we do not know the area nor anyone who lives there and therefore have had to rely on resources such as this to give a picture of the area. This is why I have come here to ask of people’s lived experiences, which has been helpful.

@claryyes live in a small village in the new forest. Very helpful to hear your lived experience, thanks :)

I've lived in Chesterfield my entire life. I've never had a single issue. Just avoid the truly rough areas. It's honestly great in terms of access to other parts of the Peaks and major cities. It's very easy to get to Sheffield, Derby, and Nottingham. The people are very friendly. It's a major town so the crime statistics will be inflated in comparison to little villages. You will get good value for money for property.

Walton is right on the edge of being rural and is lovely. Wingerworth is also very nice. If you want true countryside then Ashover and Barlow are just outside of Chesterfield.

Another option is Whitwell. It's a very cute looking village surrounded by countryside. Very quick to get to Sheffield and Chesterfield. And you're near some nice areas like Creswell Crags, Sherwood, etc.

Drugs are everywhere. But you aren't likely to encounter them in affluent areas like Walton.

@Ladamesansmerci thank you for being so helpful and informative! Could you please expand on which areas to avoid? Thank you :)

@Ladamesansmerci thank you for being so helpful and informative! Could you please expand on which areas to avoid? Thank you :)

Areas I personally think are rough, or just not very nice looking, are: New Whittington, Grassmoor, Grangewood, Mastin Moor, Derby Road Area (though there are some nice housing estates off of Derby Road), Stavely, Holmewood.

Nice areas: Wingerworth, Walton, Old Brampton, Cutthorpe, Hollymoorside, Ashgate, I quite like tapton, parts of North Wingfield are nice.

Mixed bags: Brimington, Newbold (upper Newbold is nice), Calow, Hasland, Hady

Ashover is lovely and very close to Matlock and is truly rural, but it will be more expensive. It depends whether you want a true rural experience in a little village, or whether you're happy with a larger town which is near the quaint places. Barlow again lovely but more expensive.

As for surrounding areas, I personally hate Clowne. Bolsover is cool as it has a castle with great views, but I can't comment on living there. I personally like the look of it, though some say it never recovered from the mines shutting.

Harthill which is Sheffield way is nice. I really like Dronfield and think it's a cute little place, but can't comment on the specifics of living there. Eckington/Mosborough areas are quite nice.

Like anywhere, it has nice bits, and it has some true dumps lol. There are some very run down bits, but they're not really comparable to the run down areas of major cities.
