as some of you well know i have been trying to cut back on my food bill and make more simple meals well the other day i thought i havet had eggy bread in ages and ds has never tried it so i told dp that for tea that night we were having eggy bread with ham on the side and he looked at me as if i was stupid and asked what it was so explained and he laughed at me and told me not to be silly its not eggy bread its french toast so what do you call it before we start bickering again next time i make it

I thought "French Toast" was the american name for eggy bread. Whereas in the UK French Toast is little bits of crispy dehydrated bread that come in packets. I think.

It's against the trade descriptions act to call it French toast unless you've made it in France!

i'll think i will stick with you frizby if it was ok for my family to call it eggy bread then i will to (plus it will wind him up something stupid to the point where he will sulk for that day and be extra nice to me the next )i have heared it been called french toast before but i thought they add herbs and stuff to it for french toast not just like me who whisks the egg dip in the bread then fry voila eggy bread

We used to call it Gipsy toast when we were kids, I don't know why. now I call it egg bread.

I call it eggy bread, that's what it is, eggs dipped in bread and then cooked on the griddle or fried - eggy bread.

I always thought that eggy bread was English and french toast was American. Is eggy bread a Northern term? (Parents are from Yorkshire.) Also, french toast in the USA tends to have cinnamon and/or powdered sugar and is served with maple syrup.

AFAIK dried little bits of toast are Melba toast.
In our house bread dipped in egg then fried gets called 'bread-dipped-in-egg-then-fried', because I can't stand the word 'eggy' (shudder!). Totally unreasonable!

But, then again, entirely accurate so no room for disputes .

When I was a child, my mum used to make little meat paste sandwiches and make these into French toast. I have been known to serve these to my children.

I would call that eggy bread as would my DH - our argument on this is centered around sweet/savoury. I have only ever known eggy bread to be sweet (in fact i think my experience of it is more or less limited to guide camp!). However DH insists it is savoury and would be eaten with liberal amounts of brown sauce.

We call it eggy bread, but if being a bit posh then it's French bread.
