french toast

Frizbe · 13/01/2005 23:27

I'd call it common old eggy bread, but if ya wanna be posh call it french toast!

lalaa · 13/01/2005 23:27

french toast

colditzmum · 13/01/2005 23:27

I call it eggy bread. Are you and dh from different areas of the country?

spacedonkey · 13/01/2005 23:28

I thought "French Toast" was the american name for eggy bread. Whereas in the UK French Toast is little bits of crispy dehydrated bread that come in packets. I think.

mears · 13/01/2005 23:29

That's Melba toast spacedonkey.

French toast I call it

spacedonkey · 13/01/2005 23:29

It says French Toast on the packets though.

colditzmum · 13/01/2005 23:30

It's against the trade descriptions act to call it French toast unless you've made it in France!

spacedonkey · 13/01/2005 23:30

I think it is made in France

mummytojames · 13/01/2005 23:31

i'll think i will stick with you frizby if it was ok for my family to call it eggy bread then i will to (plus it will wind him up something stupid to the point where he will sulk for that day and be extra nice to me the next )i have heared it been called french toast before but i thought they add herbs and stuff to it for french toast not just like me who whisks the egg dip in the bread then fry voila eggy bread

a variation on the bread theme if you fancy adding a twist to it

lucy5 · 13/01/2005 23:32

We used to call it Gipsy toast when we were kids, I don't know why. now I call it egg bread.

BigGayDad · 13/01/2005 23:32

French toast is eggy bread with tongues.

mummytojames · 13/01/2005 23:32

I call it eggy bread, that's what it is, eggs dipped in bread and then cooked on the griddle or fried - eggy bread.

KateandtheGirls · 14/01/2005 01:35

I always thought that eggy bread was English and french toast was American. Is eggy bread a Northern term? (Parents are from Yorkshire.) Also, french toast in the USA tends to have cinnamon and/or powdered sugar and is served with maple syrup.

AFAIK dried little bits of toast are Melba toast.
In our house bread dipped in egg then fried gets called 'bread-dipped-in-egg-then-fried', because I can't stand the word 'eggy' (shudder!). Totally unreasonable!

Levanna · 14/01/2005 02:22

But, then again, entirely accurate so no room for disputes .

starlover · 14/01/2005 09:37

we call it eggy bread!

WigWamBam · 14/01/2005 09:39

My mum always called it Gypsy toast, I call it eggy bread.

Ameriscot2005 · 14/01/2005 09:40

French toast, which my family eats with maple syrup (yuk!).

When I was a child, my mum used to make little meat paste sandwiches and make these into French toast. I have been known to serve these to my children.

flatmouse · 14/01/2005 09:50

I would call that eggy bread as would my DH - our argument on this is centered around sweet/savoury. I have only ever known eggy bread to be sweet (in fact i think my experience of it is more or less limited to guide camp!). However DH insists it is savoury and would be eaten with liberal amounts of brown sauce.

Hulababy · 14/01/2005 09:51

We call it eggy bread, but if being a bit posh then it's French bread.
