Mysterious thick, painful skin around toe nails

I have been a hairdressers for 32 years now (I love it) I started to notice I would have a lot more pain in my feet by the end of the of the night. When I went to the podiatrist I was informed I need surgery. I was missing a joint on my pinky toe, a bonion on the top of my foot, and the bone under my 2nd toe was growing towards the ground (I always thought my feet were normal, they didn't look different) I'm guessing the bone shifting was due to wearing heels to work and being in my feet for 8+ hours a day. I had my 1st surgery done in 2004 and I had both feet done at the same time. You have to need non weight barring for the first 2 weeks and by doing them together I only had to beer out of work for 3-4 weeks. After the surgery there was no pain, however I did notice some numbness in the tip of some toes but that might happen beings all your nerves endins are in your toes and that is a result of one getting damaged. Fast forward to 2016 at that time I had 7 surgeries done on each foot. I was pain free for about the next 3 years then I noticed on my big toe (where in 2 of the surgeries they had taken out 1/4 of my toenails due tu reuccuring ingrown toenails) I would get extremely hard skin down my big toenail and when I would try to get it out myself it was horribly painful, there only way I can describe it is that it feels like someone is cutting thru my toe with a hot butter knife. As the years go on id getting worse and worse. I can't go to the podiatrist and possibly have another surgery done (my oldest child was murdered in 2017 and the rest of my family has passed away) its only me and my 15 year old there would be no one to take care of her nor anyone to help me while I'm non weight barring. Plus I have to work around the clock so we have a roof over head. I used to be able to wear sneakers but its to the point now that I can't wear any sneaker that gets to narrow at the top, the least little bit of pressure on the outside of my big toe or very painful (it will hurt if the sheet lays on it at night) The skin around the outside of my big toe is SO thick, hard and painful. As I try to dig the skin out and cut it the pain is horribly bad and now I notice my cuticles on my other toes are getting thick and the skin on top of my 2nd toe is now very thick and numb. Any ideas on what this might be, what causes it and a home remedy to get rid of? I see it being at least another year before I can get surgery done, I would just like to be pain free for a little while. Thanks

Maybe get the toenails removed completely? You wouldn’t then have to dig the skin out. You also won’t need much time off, doesn’t a 15 year old basically look after themselves? A couple of days eating pizza & ready meals won’t harm them, and you will be able to walk fine after toenail removal.
Maybe start wearing barefoot shoes to avoid foot rub and hard skin build up, and moisturise your feet each night with a good foot cream.
