So i recieved a call from my sons school about a hour after dropping him off. I was told He had an accident and had a deep cut on his face. When I arrived at school to collect him , he was in a side room with his teacher , the Head teacher and school nurse . He had a split across his face just below his eye which needed stitches. I was told he had and accident in the class but nobody witnessed it and if I could talk with him and fin me out. We left school heading straight to A&E where he had the wound stitched.
After speaking with my son he explained he tripped over a tray that was pulled out ,fell and hit his face on the coner of the unit. He the got up and went to the teacher.
I am aware accidents happen and teacher may not see everything but this was inside the classroom . It has been a few days since that accident my son returned to school but nothing more has been said about it and I have not recieved a report about the accident or any updat on it anything is being done.
I'm unsure what todo any advice?

You really think a teacher can see all 30 kids at once? I’m not sure what you expect the school to do differently?

KnickerlessFlannel · 30/01/2025 21:56

I'm.not sure if school.can do anything more tbh. I'm.sorry your child was injured and it's horrible to think of them in pain. However accidents do happen and it is impossible for 1 or 2 adults to have eyes on every child every second of the day. Especially for an accident such as tripping which can happen in literal seconds.

SuperSleepyBaby · 30/01/2025 21:57

It sounds like simply an accident? Just one of those things that could easily have happened at home.

The teacher cannot be expected to have her eyes on all the children at all times.

BlwyddynNewydd · 30/01/2025 21:57

Oh love him, that looks so sore. It must have been a shock to see him with such a bad cut. I hope you are both okay.

Did you feed back to the school about what he said happened? I would ask for a copy of the accident report.

Thelondonone · 30/01/2025 21:59

If it happened at home while you had your back turned, would you go anything differently to school? If you would have then maybe home school. They can’t do anything differently, it was an accident.

100PercentFaithful · 30/01/2025 22:00

Sorry to hear your son had an accident OP. I would hope the teacher would welcome him back and ask how he was doing/say what a brave boy he was, but I’m not sure what else you want?
Unfortunately accidents happen, especially at school. Teachers can’t possibly have eyes on everywhere/everyone. Even a 1:1 might not be looking in the right direction at the right time.

Frowningprovidence · 30/01/2025 22:01

They should have reported it as your child went to recieve medical care. Reports aren't always shared but you can ask for a copy of the report. It might not have identified any actions as, sadly, children trip all the time. There is likely nothing that could have prevented it and teachers really can't see 30 children at once.

I hope your chikd is ok.

TheLymeTrew · 30/01/2025 22:02

Do nothing. They informed you as soon as they realised.

If he was hurt in your care whilst you were attending to a sibling would you expect your husband or mum to grill you and ask exactly what happened and refer you to social services for not looking after him properly?

Tilly915 · 30/01/2025 22:02

It's horrible when things like this happen. But it was just an accident by the sound of things. Even if the reacher did see it, it wouldn't have changed anything. Must've happened in a split second!

napody · 30/01/2025 22:03

PPs have covered it: accidents happen. My advice is sleep on it- it must have been a shock to you with it so near his eye but it could have happened anywhere- even if his teacher had glanced across the room and seen it she wouldnt have been able to stop it! She will have been working with children in a reception class- she's not paid to sit there all day like a lifeguard and just scan the room!

TheLymeTrew · 30/01/2025 22:03

Maybe you should home school if you have such concerns over your kids schooling and safeguarding ?

Littletreefrog · 30/01/2025 22:04

Teachers do not have eyes in the back of their head. You know how it happened, it was an accident and has been treated. I'm surprised they haven't asked you about his treatment etc for their accident book but then maybe you told them when he returned to school the next day so they already know. These things happen in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal.

Snoopdoggydog123 · 30/01/2025 22:04

Contrary to what we tell the children. Teachers do not have eyes on the back of their head.

Considering your issue. Can we all assume your son has never ever ever hurt a single hair on his head under your diligent care?

Autumn1990 · 30/01/2025 22:04

one of mine did something similar although they could see what had caused it by the trail of blood and it was just a random accident as we have the same item at home and how it caused such as bad cut is beyond me.
It was a shock though being called into school due to a cut that wouldn’t stop bleeding.
I just got a bump letter

Yes ,thank you he is doing okay , showing off his stitches to everyone.
I have requested the accident report via email as it has been a week since it happened. And as I said I do understand the teacher can't see everything but I find it strange they are not investigating or trying to show they are doing anything to prevent this happening again to any child inside the classroom, a playground I get.

A child in my class broke both arms in a split second accident that I didn't see.

The father (who only saw his kid one weekend a month) came into school ranting and raving, and informed us that we were going to be sued. After providing a statement about exactly what has happened, I heard no more and assumed that he'd ultimately done nothing about it.

But it turned out the head had been protecting me. He turned up in my clsssroom six months later to let me know that the case has resulted in the judge basically laughing the dad out of court.

What would they be investigating? They know what happened. Trips happen. Do you want the classroom padded out like soft play?

Not a lot they can do though is there apart from telling the children to watch where they are going which they probably already do. Not every risk can be mitigated against. And I say that as someone whose child nearly got those Little Tyke cars removed from nursery because he managed to roll one.

Greenbottle123 · 30/01/2025 22:11

What can they do to prevent a child tripping over?

KnickerlessFlannel · 30/01/2025 22:11

Investigating what though? It's a learning environment it won't be sterile. There will be trip hazards and things that kids can bang their faces on. I think you need to let it go.

Blusterylimp · 30/01/2025 22:12

What would you like to happen OP? Compensation for an accident?

FiveTreeHill · 30/01/2025 22:16

He tripped and fell. 4yos trip and fall, they trip and fall at home, they trip and fall at school, at clubs, friends. Lots and lots of 4 you get wounds on their faces from tipping

He hasn't split his face open hes got a smallish cut to his cheek, it needed some stitches, that's completely normal. The teacher can't be watching all children at once

Talapia · 30/01/2025 22:18

It does look sore. However, there is no way to prevent all accidents. Possibly a risk assesment may have been carried out and concluded it was a normal childhood accident.
I would ask the school..

It is impossible to observe 30 children at the same time and even with a TA they still wouldn't see everything.

Poor little boy though, it must have been a shock for both of you

They can't prevent it happening again. Kids trip over. In the case if the child in my class there was absolutely nothing we could change to prevent it happening again.

Yes a drawer was pulled out on your son's classroom, but there's no foolproof way of making sure that reception class kids never leave a drawer open briefly.
