I live in a 1 bed private rental apartment with my boyfriend. My friend has asked if she can move in, she said she will sleep in the living room on a blow up bed. She said she will contribute with bills. I don't know what to say to my landlord? Can someoneonr give me advice please ?

Seriously bad idea.
Soon you'll be asking on here

''How do I get my ex best friend out of my house, she has taken up with my boyfriend and now I'm the one dossing on the sofa''

Over occupancy as well.

Check your contract. I am 99% sure it’s a no.

byteme1011 · 19/01/2025 22:00

I wouldn't bother telling the landlord if my friend was sleeping on a sofa bed for a couple of weeks waiting for her new lease to start etc (basically there's NEEDs to be an end date) otherwise no chance

Do you and your boyfriend actually want her to move in?

Is it going to be a temporary thing or more permanent?

What does your tenancy agreement say about subletting?

She's a very close friend of mine.

Right.

But do you want her to move in?

TheWorldisGoingMad · 19/01/2025 22:23

Most tenancy agreements do not allow subletting, you need to ask permission. Otherwise you're breaking your tenancy agreement which is legal grounds to serve you notice.

Check your tenancy agreement.

@Keyleighlou

It's not the right solution for any of you, OP.

Why has she asked? What are the circumstances?

SlovenlyOldSlut · 19/01/2025 22:58

I have a one-bed BTL flat in an area where you need to have a licence to be a landlord. The council originally tried to tell me that I could only allow one person to live there. I argued that it was ridiculous to say a couple couldn’t live in a one-bed flat and it was immediately overturned - but if councils are trying to suggest this, they’re certainly not going to sign off three people in that space.

Icanttakethisanymore · 19/01/2025 23:11

I wouldn’t worry about ‘getting in trouble’ but I’d worry about the practicalities of this unless it’s a defined short period of time.

kiwiane · 19/01/2025 23:35

No - there’s not room so she cannot move in with you!

CrotchetyQuaver · 20/01/2025 08:24

I would imagine if you asked your landlord the answer would be no. You should ask them first. It's going to put a lot more extra wear and tear on the flat
