Can't get rid of new kettle taste

Bought a new kettle and washed it with washing up liquid, boiled and discarded four lots of water. It's still giving off a weird chemical taste. Also did a quick soak in bicarb and boiled and discarded again. Any ideas on what I can try next?

I didn't think you were meant to wash them with washing up liquid? I would fill it up a few more times, boil it then empty it - then let it air for a few hours

I boiled it with a couple of big tablespoons of bicarb. Let ut sit for an hour, dumped, rinsed, boiled and dumped again. Was fine after that.

I'm surprised by the boiling with soap - I never do that. But I'd do a couple of boils, maybe one of those kettle clean things and if it still doesn't... take it back. We took one back a few years ago for this reason. It just never lost the smell so after a few days we went back and exchanged it.

I wad a bit unclear, sorry - I washed it and rinsed it with dish soap, I didn't boil it. I think I will take it back if it doesn't shift today. Do you remember what make yours was that you had to return?

Thank you! I googled and wash it out with dish soap was recommended so I gave it a try. Airing sounds like a good idea

I only let it sit in the bicarb for half an hour I'll try your suggestion thank you

No, I don't. But I guarantee it wasn't an expensive one - we tend to buy our small appliances from Sainsburys. In part because they're so good about returns or faults when necessary.

I had a Russell Hobbs kettle that was like this, tried all sorts of things and then found a suggestion that inside the RH kettle there was red plastic depth indicator. Removed that and the horrible taste went away.

Most new kettle instructions tell you to fill, boil throw water away, do this twice, before using

Kingsleadhat · 02/01/2025 17:08

This was also not expensive it's a Logik from Currys. Not sure what their returns policy is like

I had this from a russell hobbs kettle, dumped it in the end, couldnt get rid of it.
