What age is best to start swimming lessons

My ds is 18 months old and several friends have enrolled their children to start swimming lessons this term (same age +- a month). DS loves swimming but I don't think he has the coordination yet to actually 'learn' how to swim.

Money is an issue so I don't want to enrol him too early yet it is something we want him to learn as soon as he can iyswim.

Any suggestions welcome!

when can you actually start with float suits and the like?

never to yojng to go in a swimming pool for fun but to actually start swimming lessons I would say 3 to 3.5. It isn't a good idea to get them accustomed to arm bands and floats as it makes them slower to learn the real strokes and it also gives parents a false sense of security
