my elder dd is desperate to share her room with her younger sister (16 months). but that means dd 2 moving in to bottom bunk. and it means i can make nursery an office. is 16 mnths too young to go into proper bed? even with a rail? also do i keep her in a gro bag in the hope of containing her or bite the bullet and give her a duvet? or shall i just wait a few months? thanks.

Duvets are safe from a year apparently, but you will know if your dd is mature enough to cope with one. The rails I've seen have been from 18 months though.

Wait. My dd is 16 months and I wouldn't put her in a bed yet...my Ds was 2yo before he was in a proper bed, was in a cot before and a big child at that, but i didn't think he was mature enough to cope with a bed until that time. My Dd will probably be in a cot in my room for another 1.5 years, as I don't have a third bedroom and my Ds is nearly 10, so wouldn't be fair on him.

She's had a duvet from around 6 months though...

My DD has been out of a cot since 12 months but she is on a matress on the floor. I can't imagine why you can't use a bed rail before 18 months tbh. I wouldn't use a gro bag tho because if she wants to get out of bed in the morning or whatever she might get caught up with it. My dd does have a quilt (a lightweight one) but you could use sheets and blankets if you're not 100 percent sure.

JennsterSlugSlayer · 01/05/2008 15:36

Might just be the soft rail ones you shove under the matress. If they are attached maybe you can use them from earlier. Dd is still in a cot at 2+. She's tiny and I'm not sure she could climb back in if she fell out, so why make trouble for yourself I say.

a 16 month old in a bunk bed sounds like a recipe for a quick trip to a and e - you wouldnt keep my 2 year old in that bottom bunk for love nor money, she'd be shinning up that ladder and jumping off the top bunk quick as wink

Good point Enid

My ds was in a bed at 14m..without a bed rail and with a duvet (He used to mountaineer out of the cot)

We had a stair gate on the door but he would mountaineer over that too so we had to take it off. lmao

Never caused us any probs.

Now the sharing the room...that was a whole different matter

Give it a try and see how it goes if you think she is ready.

what i wondered re the climbing into the top bunk is that she would never try that now so poss it is better to get her used to the bottom bunk and sharing now rather than moving her in when she is older and she thinks it would be a great idea to start climbing..........

lol

mine wouldnt have done it at 16 months but believe me, she will when she is 2/2.5...

My Ds2 went in to a bottom bunk bed at 16 months and DS1 went on the top from 3.5 years. We never had any accidents and they both slept really soundly. You know your children and how they will react, if you think it is right go for it!
