Alternative to Bounty pack - I mean, do you really need Lenor when you've just had a baby?

What would you put into a Bounty-type pack that you get either in pregnancy or soon after your baby's born?

Imagine it's got to be self-supporting/funding - so it needs some advertising.

What would've been useful to you? What was utterly unuseful?

Think about things to read, free samples, money off vouchers, etc, etc.

Mine had far too many leaflets in it. In fact I didn't get a Bounty pack with dd2 and was quite pleased, although it was a pain registering for Child Benefit without the form that comes in the Bounty pack.

The baby wipes were handy (although I only used them when out and about, not at home.)

Breast pads would be good - the disposable ones come in quite large boxes so wasteful if a brand doesn't suit you. Samples of maternity/sanitary pads as we all need those. Vouchers for above items.

Sidge · 30/04/2008 20:57

Info about breastfeeding. Proper info not that airy fairy guff with leaflets with lots of pictures of cute babies but no real information.

Breast pads.

Maternity pads.

I liked the Comfort sample as well as I love the smell of the Comfort Pure

onepieceoflollipop · 30/04/2008 21:00

snack samples (for mum) such as chocolate cereal bars, bags of dried fruit etc.

waffletrees · 30/04/2008 21:00

Er, vouchers for a someone to do all the night feeds .

Painkillers would have been useful.

llareggub · 30/04/2008 21:03

I'd keep it local. I spent lots and lots of time in coffee shops so I would approach a suitably large independent coffee shop and get them to supply bags and vouchers, together with a promise to be bf friendly.

Inside the bag, vouchers and/or leaflets for local greengrocers, real nappy people and laundry service and NCT bf contacts.

Keep it local and green. Could even put toddler groups in.

The core of the pack could be generic with the product stuff in, but to be honest I binned most of it.

MerlinsBeard · 30/04/2008 21:03

bounty packs=spam ime!!

A good pack would be balanced...

info on formula feeding (not formula) as well as breastfeeding

samples of nappies so you don't have to buy a whole pack ,maybe a reusable one too so you can try it

travel size trials of wipes (handy for travel as well as seeing if they are "the ones")

i liked the samples of washing powder and softener actually but i usually use shops own so it felt like a treat

maybe a list of local groups/places to go with baby

expatinscotland · 30/04/2008 21:04

i put mine in paper recyling .

the Bounty, that is, and kept the plastic pouch to use to transport papers when it's wet out.

EffiePerine · 30/04/2008 21:05

food
lavender oil
arnica
breast pads

MerlinsBeard · 30/04/2008 21:05

a list of useful websites...i look online for help before i will ring anyone (i won't physically ask for help)

PotPourri · 30/04/2008 21:06

I think the practical things - breastpads, sanitary pads, disposable pants even are a great idea.

Washing powder is good, just cos that is dear to buy.

Maybe details about cloth nappies/discounts from online retailers and details of support groups/websites...

Leaflet about mumsnet (although Bounty have their own obviously)

I binned most of my bounty packs- what a lot of waste.

geordieminx · 30/04/2008 21:08

CHOCOLATE AND GIN

PotPourri · 30/04/2008 21:09

I definately like the mini sudocreme pot and travel wipes - one of those plastic travel wipes packs would be good. In my bounty packs I got a big plastic storage one, but the small one would have been more use as I use cloth at home.

Shampoo, shower gel smaples - something loverly like original source, or aromatherapy types ones. Food as someone else mentioned - cereal bars & crisps

Lansinoh sample. something soothing for down below - like teatree wipes or something.

cmotdibbler · 30/04/2008 21:10

I did use the Persil non bio muslin that came in mine along with samples - which were useful when we were working out which non bio shifted poo out of nappies the best. The only other thing of use was the toothbrush, although 2 years on the pack of nappy bags is still lurking around for visitor use, and I think I saw the Sudocrem pot the other day.

How about internet shopping adverts from supermarkets with free delivery vouchers

Free drink vouchers from Starbucks or similar so that they can target the new mum 'needs to go out' market, and show that they welcome bfing

Real nappy info would be good

BF helpline numbers and local bf clinics on a single sheet

I hated the detergent (Persil??) and fabric softner that came in my pregnancy one as they smelled so strongly compared to my normal wafty eco stuff. They went straight in the bin...

The one I had after the birth had a Persil-branded muslin which came in pretty useful, also small pot of sudocreme. Leaflets went in the recycling mostly. Think I also used the babywipes at some point.

I'm not averse to 'how to guides/mags' etc branded by companies, as long as I know who is behind the publication and the info within is correct. But I think you could get onto dodgy ground with things like infant feeding etc.

i quite like mine have had a few as they give you vouchers for more in the book and i specially go collect from asda to recieve an extra £5 voucher for baby clothes. Ds has lots of asda babygros now!

am rambling sorry!

agree lasinoh sample, midwife gave me one and it lasts sges if you eek it out, i would never have spent £10 on nipple cream if i hadnt seen how great it was with my own eyes

agree travel box for wipes, nobody uses big boxes they give as wipes dry out

i understand the washing powder thing, samples come in freebie bags at nct nearly new sales as well, as a new mum the amount of laundry you do multiples ime so can see why manufacturers target us. {i use the comfort to get rid of lingering smells that wont shift, sample lasts forever}

my nephew ate all the samples of follow on milk dry with a spoon, he was 7

MerlinsBeard · 30/04/2008 21:27

they should be taileroed according to stage of pregnancy/age of baby too

ie an ealry pg one could have a few gingernuts in, a late pg one some gaviscon

I do NOT want samples of baby rice in my newborn one than you very much!!!

hunkermunker · 30/04/2008 21:34

Good ideas, thank you, people.

How about local stuff? Details of support groups, etc? Local services?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 30/04/2008 21:35

information about local children's centres would be good if they have them

EffiePerine · 30/04/2008 21:36

Local bf groups would be great (not even the HV told me about the one which met opposite my house )

halogen · 30/04/2008 21:37

Biscuits, painkillers, cartons of juice, travel-sizes of cream/wipes/whatever, samples of nappies, moisturiser in sachets large enough to actually use (on yourself, not baby), tissues.

Basically, I'd have liked things that would actually be useful in the hospital immediately after the birth. I didn't give a stuff about washing powder and once I got home it was easy enough to get hold of things as there were shops and people to help and the internet.

halogen · 30/04/2008 21:40

Also, yes, information would have been lovely. Details of helplines (breastfeeding, PND, whatever), local mother and baby groups, activities for babies, breastfeeding-friendly cafés etc.

The bounty packs are just advertising to new mums, that's all.

It costs a fortune to get your leaflets into bounty packs, so it's just those that can afford it that are included, rather than a proper mix of useful information for parents.

Hunker are you planning on starting a better one?
