My Aunt found this in my Great Grandmother's cookbook and I would love to be able to translate it for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can't help you, but oh, how I wish I could! I did a post-grad secretarial course and managed to get up to 120wpm with my shorthand. But because I never ended up using it in my next (or subsequent) job(s) I completely forgot it. Which is a shame, as I loved learning it. Like a secret code!

I hope someone can help you Flowers

Oh I wish my mum were still alive, she'd have been all over this!

Me too! Over the years I've used a few outlines when taking notes but it has sadly all gone. However, if someone wants a quick note of "we thank you for your letter of yesterday's date", I'm your woman.

I was also going to say try Reddit, went to check the details and, of course, there you are, and I see they've helped.

And it looks like riveting stuff! Shame it isn't directions to treasure.

An enigma machine might help! 😆
Do you think its a recipe of just something she has written? Just that it doesn't look like a recipe at all given the numbers.
I'm no help I'm afraid, but a hopeful bump to someone that can.

It’s hard to tell what kind of shorthand this is. These strokes like some kind of Pitman. Back in the 70s I learned Pitman New Era but I don’t think that this is what this is because everyone of her strokes seems to begin or sit on the line whereas with Pitman New Era where the stroke begins depends upon whether the first vowel is long or short, and then some short forms are also either above or on the line. And some strokes start by going through the line. Sorry not to be of help here.

My Mum studied Pitman shorthand, back in the 1960's, I will see if I can screenshot the picture and ask her if it's Pitman. I studied Teeline shorthand, and although some parts look similar, I'm not sure Teeline was used until the 90's. I do.have my Teeline shorthand books, so many be able to compare!!

Shorthand is a funny thing. My late DM learned in the late 1930's and used it when she was a legal secretary. After her death I took a load of notes of her shorthand into work and spoke to our MD's PA who was very good at shorthand. She took one look and scratched her head, and said that it was not just a version of shorthand she didn't know very well, but my DM's own unique adaptation of it. which made it pretty much indecipherable.

Not much help then, especially when a lot of it was in DM's address book, and I never did get it translated. Confused

Upload the image to chatgpt or copilot. That will decipher it. I'm not at my desk right now and on an old phone or I would do it for you.

This is Greggs shorthand, not the most commonly used.
I learned and used Greggs in the 1960s and still have on my bookshelves various Greggs text books.
At first sight I am unable to transcribe but will persevere and see how much I can read

My mother is amazing at shorthand. Even at 81, the speed she can write it is baffling.

Thanks. So it wasn't the OP updating that on this thread, it was another poster seeing it Reddit- I thought I was going mad!

PiggieWig · 26/11/2024 19:23

That took a confusing turn! Came on to say it’s not Teeline. I use it every day and I’m pretty fluent in it.
Its handy if I want to write secret lists at home!
