Fairly certain carpet fitters took cds from stereo

I had carpets fitted on Wednesday bought from Allied. The fitters seemed lovely guys - very helpful and friendly. So much so I gave them a tip as I felt they went over and above what they needed to do with regard to unscrewing a larder cupboard from the wall so the carpet didn't have to go round it and cause me extra cost in having the door trimmed.

However.....today when I decided to listen to a cd and last week put 13 cds in the player, no sound comes out. I opened it up to see if something was stuck and no cds!!!

All the empty boxes are in the cd cabinet.

Is it worth ringing Allied tomorrow and complaining since it wasn't discovered straight away? Or put it down to misfortune and be more careful in future to keep an eye on what's going on.

What were they?

GrapefruitMoon · 27/04/2008 18:50

Worth checking that someone else hasn't taken out the cds first i would think....

weebleswobble · 27/04/2008 18:51

A varied selection from Amy Winehouse to Rod Stewart to Katy Melua and Dina Carroll.

I've checked with everyone else - nobody touched them.

Well you can breathe a sigh of relief that someone exercised good sense in katie's case.

weebleswobble · 27/04/2008 18:54

At least the other Katie cd was in the car!

oh bad luck !

NotABanana · 27/04/2008 18:56

If you are absolutely 100% certain no one else in the family has moved them, or anyone else been in the house, then you need to ring and complain. It is theft. If Allied won't take it seriously, go to the Head Office and Chairman.

LobstersLass · 27/04/2008 19:02

If you can't prove it was them, then I don't see you can do anything about it.

Has anyone else been in your house this week?

Have you checked that the CD boxes for all 13 in the cabinet are empty?

Without proof, I really don't see the staff at Allied being able to do anything about it.

catinthehat · 27/04/2008 19:05

Another little trick I've heard of is to empty the bottles in the sideboard and fill up with water. Nobody complains because it's found out after the event. I think I would complain, reflects badly on straight tradesmen, also Allied won't want you telling all your friends and interweb forums that they use bent people to go into their customers houses. This won't be the first time that team have done it.

weebleswobble · 27/04/2008 19:05

Nobody else other than my dcs and dp have been here. I've got all the empty boxes.

weebleswobble · 27/04/2008 19:06

Cat, that's what Dp thought - even though I may not get anywhere with it, it might protect the next unsuspecting customer.

I think you should try to get "somewhere" with it for you in fact. This crew obviously have the scam worked out, and Allied have let them into your home. They've ripped you off, and you are going to want enough cash back from this branch of Allied or their insurers to pay you back for your CDs. Otherwise you may start getting very gobby at area , then head office level and indeed everywhere you go from now on where you meet or communicate with people out to buy a bit of carpet. For instance, how negligent would it be to employ staff/contractors with a criminal record to go into customer homes - are Allied able to answer this?

catinthehat · 27/04/2008 19:15

very very cross on your behalf

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 27/04/2008 19:19

Allied carpet (certainly my local branch) don't directly employ the fitters. Instead they have a number of teams of self-employed fitters who they sub-contract the work out to. So I guess there aren't really any checks into their background. If you complain they may stop using that certain team for their customers. So if you are sure tell Allied.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 27/04/2008 19:20

Your kids aren't old enough to have taken them and sold them are they?

Just a thought as my cousin used to do stuff like that.

weebleswobble · 27/04/2008 19:22

Ok I'm going to ring them tomorrow when I get in from work and report back.

I heard on lbc last week that advertising the fact that you "regret using the services of so and so business" doesn't break any laws and is very effective, especially when advertised outside their premises.

OP posts:
weebleswobble · 27/04/2008 19:23

No Stripey and I don't think they'd have the market for my taste in music.

that appauling. Once you have ruled out every other possibility then you must ring Allied Carpets and tell them. And then put it in writing and you know what, tell the police as well, they may not do anything but at the least they might give you a crime reference number.

nannyL · 28/04/2008 16:23

any news?

weebleswobble · 28/04/2008 16:48

Panic over! When I got home I thought I'd open the cd player and check just in case and with a torch I could see that they had slipped through a gap at the back of the player into the casing. 137 screws later I had the back off and got them off.

It must have happened in the transportation from one room to another.

I LOVE ALLIED CARPET FITTERS!!!!

Message for Moondog: I have copied Katie Melua for you. Just say the word and it's on it's way.

Oh thats good. Thankfully you found them before ringing Allied Carpet up.

AmIWhatAndWhy · 28/04/2008 18:07

Why would they want to take 13 boxless cds, and risk their job over it?

it's very easy to 'steal music' these days by downloading
.

zippitippitoes · 28/04/2008 18:10

so that is where my missing cds are
