Would you spend £200 on tiles if the bathroom suite only cost £300?

(and the bathroom suite includes taps).

Just seems a high proportion of the bathrrom cost IYSWIM.

Is the bathroom upstairs? It isn't great to tile upstairs as (if it is floorboards) they shift as the house moves about and the tile cement can crack. Also, they are incredibly slippery when wet, and cold. So you would have to pay me more than £200 to have them! Just my opinion though!

QuintessentialShadows · 27/04/2008 11:29

On my new second bathroom (doing a self build, it has two bathrooms) I am spending a lot on tiles, but will only get a basic wall hung toilet and a basic sink, and no shower cubicle, just curtains (wetroom, so cubicle not necessary). So in my idea, it is the tiles that make the room. It will be quite simple and serene with a few choice accessories in dark wood, orange and fuschia towels and glass tea lights.

Definitely spend on the tiles!

Cammelia · 27/04/2008 11:35

Colander, my workmen fixed down new 2 inch plyboard on top of the ancient floorboards for the tiled bathroom floors.

noddyholder · 27/04/2008 11:38

Dragon that would look beautiful above a door if you had enough ceiling height A new career ahead!

noddyholder · 27/04/2008 11:39

Marine ply and flexible adhesive and grout will stop them cracking.I always tile bathrooms and have never cracked But they can be cold without underfloor heating

QuintessentialShadows · 27/04/2008 11:41

Dragonbutter I just read your profile page, (and your mosaics are gorgeous)

I wonder if I know you rl?

I have a friend in Devon who started doing mosaics a few years ago. I wonder if you ever lived in London

SlightlyMadSweet · 27/04/2008 16:51

Sorry I went out.

Will read deeper later.

I am not tiling much actually (about 5m2).

Back of bath wall to ceiling
End of bath to ceiling
End of bath other end about 60cm up
Sink splashback and windowsil.

lovely,lovely mosaics dragonbutter - clever you !
SlightlyMadSweet - go for the tiles - they make the difference I think...ours were £200 (bathroom fittings were £1100 ) but everyone comments on the tiles (they are nice simple Johnson's tiles -in 3 colours, turquoise, cobalt and powder blue

Dragonbutter · 27/04/2008 22:34

Slightly, the tiles look lovely. Go for it.

Thanks to everybody else who likes my mosaic. I should be taking some new photos of the finished thing this week so i'll put one on my profile.
I put the photos on my profile when i asked the wisdom of mumsnet to chose me a pic for the exhibition website. The gallery ended up chosing my pic for the private viewing invitations. Amazing.
I would love it to be a new career for me as I absolutely love doing it. It's my therapy.

QS, I don't think it's me. Sorry, I've never lived in london. I've yet to be recognised by someone in RL, so that was very nearly exciting.

SlightlyMadSweet · 27/04/2008 23:13

Yes we have decided on the tiles.

Now I am just trying to decide on layout....so that we have enough wastage on green and white for mistakes.

The layout I want gives me a purchase of 48 tiles to lay (do you 'lay' wall tiles ) 48 tiles - so no room for wastage. Not only that they would be in an area where there is lots of cutting...so deffo need spares for mistakes!!!

It is like a mini sudoku puzzle to get a sensible layout with sensible order of tiles.

They are special order so I can only have full boxes.

Dragonbutter you would love this place

Casa Lis

I went there a couple of weeks ago

Dragonbutter · 28/04/2008 09:31

Oh don't. I have a fantasy of my life once the kids are all grown up where i can flounce off all over europe looking at beautiful mosaics and taking courses in italian studios.
For now I just look through books and sketch ideas with no idea when i'll get the time to actually make them.
Only 35 years to go til retirement!

QuintessentialShadows · 28/04/2008 20:39

Dragonbutter, if you want it bad enough, dont put it off til retirement! (Bad "retirement Karma".)

I am slightly glad you are not my friend, who fancies bumping into her old boss on mn?? lol

Dottydot · 28/04/2008 20:46

Yes - we've bought a suite for £335, including taps, shower mixer etc and will probably end up paying about £150 for the tiles - which aren't even posh but we need to cover about 6msq and that's the cost! Still think it's a bargain to (hopefully) have a bathroom done for under £1000 (including flooring and fitting!!).

Just hope we can do the kitchen for under £3,000...

Cammelia · 29/04/2008 11:03

Are you guys doing your bathrooms yourselves

SlightlyMadSweet · 29/04/2008 18:00

We are.

My DB is a qualified (but non practising) plumber so is doing the water stuff.

We will do tiling.

OP posts:
Dottydot · 29/04/2008 20:39

OK, I now have to eat my words... The plumber's just phoned and the total cost of the bathroom suite + heated towel rail + fitting = £1,250...

Then tiles will be about £160, laminate about £200 and the bloke doing both those has costed it for £240

So that's a grand total of about £1,900

Which brings our kitchen budget down to £3,000...

Nightmare. Don't know whether the plumber's expensive - the suite + towel rail = £450, so the rest (£800) is to fit it - the toilet's moving position so he has to do some pipe work outside the house.

Aaarrggghhhhh...

Swedes · 29/04/2008 20:44

I think you can make a cheap bathroom suite look really brilliant with good taps and good tiles. So definitely yes.

I did my house bathroom recently
suite (sink, bath and toilet) £299
shower tray £140
taps for bath and sink £250
Tiles (travertine) £450
Towel rail/radiator £300
labour about £1,000

LucyJones · 29/04/2008 20:45

just seen your profile pic of the whole family - gorgeous

Nero · 29/04/2008 20:59

Yes - the right tiles will make a big difference to your bathroom.

Dottydot · 29/04/2008 21:02

ooh Swedes - you've made me feel better now - do you think £800 to fit a bathroom is reasonable?

Hello LucyJones!! I think £10K is probably what we need...! With a bit of scraping together we've got about £3,500

Will be reporting hourly once we've got the cost in (hopefully tomorrow) to wail about how we're going to afford it.

Swedes · 29/04/2008 21:51

Probably, if he is moving positions of things - perhaps it's worth getting another quote just to guauge pricing? It doesn't sound astronomical to me. Make sure that quote includes carting the old suite away and disposing of it.

ash6605 · 29/04/2008 21:57

Definately,I'd be so pleased to get the suite for that price that I'd be happy to splash out on other things like flooring, tiles, accessories etc

LittleBella · 29/04/2008 21:58

Yes I would

Bath doesn't matter, tiles do
