If I'm selling a car privately and someone wants to test drive it, how does that work?

I mean, do I demand to see their fully comp policy documents? Or do I drive it? Or go with them?

If they drove it alone, how do I stop them nicking it?

Sorry, probably very stupid questions, but have never done it before and would appreciate advice from anyone who knows more than me!

Thanks.

i think its sensible to ask to see their insurance and for you or ideally a man(sexist but sensible nonetheless) to accompany them or why cant you just take them for a drive in it?

what is the world coming to when this becomes a genuine worry.

Well, indeed, although it's not so much the nicking it part that scares me as that someone without adequate insurance will prang the bloody thing and then not buy it! Not sure legally what the crack is re insurance...

Hmm, tricky one, it depends on their insurance policy, it's a bit of a myth that if you have a fully comp insurance policy then you are insured to drive any car (third party cover only though). I would ask them if they have such a policy and if they have then let them take it for a test drive and you go with them. Obviously though if they crash your car, your car will not be insured to be repaired. It's a chance thousands of people take. Happy selling!

i rang my dh at work lol he says you should sk for their car keys whilst they drive yours with you in the passenger seat and also the car is no good without the paperwork and so you only show them the paperwork if they are ready to complete the sale.

Thanks both of you. To be honest, the run of luck we're having with the damn thing at the moment I think it's best to play safe and maybe send DP out to drive it with them in it...

Be wary of their age I am under 25 and although my car insurance is fully comp I am not insured to drive other cars, not even third party. My insurers told me this was fairly standard for under 25's...so just be aware.

bohemianbint · 26/04/2008 19:04

windygales - you called your DH at work on my behalf?

Bky - ah...good point, I did not realise that.

I'm 31 and with fully comp insurance am still not insured to drive other peoples' cars.

Didn't realise this until one day on the phone to my insurance company and I told them that as my car was bust I'd drived dh's car to wor and the bloke told me I wasn't insured to drive other cars.

But if I was buying a car I would want to drive it - not just sit in it while someone else drove it.

beautifuldays · 26/04/2008 19:47

even if they do have fully comp insurance and it does cover them to drive other people's cars, it will only be third party.

that means if they prang it into another car the insurance will only pay out for the damage to the other car. not to yours. best thing is for you (or your dh) to take them out for a drive.
