My DH has spent £300 on a new pool cue. We can afford it and I dont mind at all but today I joked that he has no qualms about spending money on what I see as a pure treat for himself. I commented that I dont think I could do it. That everything I buy is for our home or any potential large spends would be on our forthcoming first baby.

He then said I could have the same on whatever I wanted, not a necessity like clothes but a a pure selfish treat for just me. Now, I wouldn't necessarily do it as its just tit for tat, and i dont have an issue with the cue. Just really heightened that I couldnt imagine spending money on myself. So, I have been thinking since 4pm this afternoon what the hell could I buy if I wanted to?

What would you buy, purely for you?

well, if you save and you're ok for money, lets go the other way. I think we're talking brusters millions things here - things you can't keep. You should be planning a day of perfection, so the first 50 quid goes to your bloke - he can entertain the kids for 10 hours on that including a meal out and petrol.

That gives you 250 to blow. You will need to work up to your ideal evening out with a a girlpal. You will need a blow dry, a manicure 65. This should take you to lunch. Eat Lobster, drink chablis - 45. Spend the afternoon in antique shops etc planning other money blowing days on a grander scale. Buy spectacular chocolates 35 pounds. Buy Shoes. Buy Cocktails. Go to the Theatre. That should do it.

interesting post doctor's wife - I too find it difficult to spend money. even on housey stuff, let alone stuff for me. I'm not saying I;m some sort of martyr but it just doesn't come naturally. I'm not a big clothes buyer - ie I don't shop often, and I certainly don;t shop for long, but I could, at a stretch, spend a quick half hour in jigsaw and tot up a £200 bill (and not go back for a good 6-12 months). not £300 though. I'd have to pop to Jones and buy some boots too.

other than clothes I could just about spend that on several days away - alone or with friends. again, can;t say I ever have.

but if someone said here's £300 and you can only have it if you spend it on something indulgent I'd probably spend it on eating out. but I couldn;t do that alone (nor rack up a £300 bill alone) so I'd have to take someone with me. is that allowed?

or - the closest thing to your dh's pool cue - a gadget for measuring, timing, mapping my running. they cost £250

I just did this-blew not quite 300 quid but still a scary amount in one day- DH booked a pregnancy massage and facial for me ( Christmas present) and I added on a long overdue haircut. Was very nice and have been super stressed about all sorts of stuff lately but still slightly resented spending the money to be honest-apart from the haircut I don't normally do that stuff at all. Once you have children (we have DS already) and no longer have the luxury of two incomes and no childcare costs it becomes very hard to spend money on yourself.

Just logged in to see what we've spent the cash on, like i said I wouldnt necessarily have spent it. However reading this, I think Im going to wait until the morning sickness subsides and book a day of pampering and maybe some new maternity clothes. That way I can feel a bit more comfortable and refreshed when this first trimester is over. Thank you for all the ideas, think the message here is that women just crave a quiet indulgent break!

Loads of things. Would have to decide between:

Towards a Laptop
Clarins Products
Books
towards a Chloe or Mulberry Handbag
Flights to Spain with Easyjet

I spent a night completely alone in the Drake Hotel in Brighton in December. It was lovely to have a bed and room service to myself. It cost £350. (wouldn't choose the Drake again because of traffic noise but would do similar again)
