I watched Little Miss Sunshine on DVD last night and both my DH and I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, we were completely shocked by the scene at the beauty pageant where little girls were dressed in bikinis that were designed to portray them as nothing more than sexual objects imo, wore heavy makeup and were dressed up like teenage prom queens. In addition, the emphasis of the pageant was about conforming to a narrow criteria of beauty.
The one saving feature of the pageant was the talent contest but even that was more about fulfilling the needs of the pushy, uber-competitive mothers/fathers who were living their dreams through their daughters. No wonder Olive's family felt uncomfortable about the whole thing.
I know that this was only a film but no doubt real life pageants are like this. Why would parents subject their daughters to such an undignifying circus? It is just wrong on so many levels imho.
If I had a daughter, no way would I let her wear a bikini at the age of 7 let alone let her participate in a beauty pageant. If that makes me an old fashion fuddy duddy so be it.
