what outdoor toys are a must for DS nearly 2yo?

Well the title said it really? He has little/no toys for outside play, so going to get him some this weekend, is there any MUST toys to have, anything your DC's play with all the time?

Gardne not massive, but good size and completely blocked in, so no escape!

sand pit if you can bare the mess.

Some kind of ride-on tractor or truck

A football!

You need sand, water, balls. You don't have to spend much money.

kay1981 · 22/04/2008 16:11

He's still likely to eat sand! Water and balls good idea though, do you think a slide and/or climbing frame thing is necessary?

if you do have a bit of money those play cars they ha ve at toddler groups and a watering can and a toy house and a slide are all v v popular in my house

MrsBadger · 22/04/2008 16:12

water
sand / mud (wear old clothes and let him get messy)
balls
ride-on

rest you can do at the park

belgo · 22/04/2008 16:12

yes he's likely to eat sand but he'll find out very quickly that it's gross

kay1981 · 22/04/2008 16:15

Belgo - you would think wouldnt you? but he manage to like it at his cousins house when they played with the sand pit there and he came in with it all over his mouth and licking his lips!

they all love sand but it does make a huge mess so I wouldn't really recommend it. And it also stinks when it gets rained on!

I wouldn't bother with a slide especially not a baby one as they grow out of them so quickly.

If you have concrete, those big chalks are great for drawing on the ground or on a wall (also maybe for when he's older)

ClareVoiant · 22/04/2008 16:26

balls, balls and more balls ds is always happy with a ball. and a watering can, his wheelbarrow, sand pit (with cover) at far end of garden, gives time for them to shed some of the sand before they get back in the house. we have one of those pop up sun tents, they make a good play house.

Tommy · 22/04/2008 16:30

we've got something similar to this and it is always popular - can do it on their own or with friends.

MadamePlatypus · 22/04/2008 17:35

Re: slides and climbing frames, yes they are loads of fun, but unless you live in the middle of nowhere, its also nice to have an excuse to visit the climbing frame in the park, and slides and climbing frames that are suitable for 2 year olds will be quickly outgrown.

Sand/water/sensory tray - like a deep paint rolling tray to fill with lots of cool interesting things eg ice-cubes that can melt in the heat, gravel, pasta, gloop, sand, water etc.

Musical instruments maybe pans hung on the fence etc for him to bang.

Wendy house, pop up tent.

Lots of things to build obstacle courses with planks, boxes etc.

Swing, slide.

Balls - all different sizes.

Chalk board.

Soil, plant pots, gardening equipment

Trike, ridealong toys, pull/push along toys.

Treasure basket.

Books.

Dolls, prams, tea set etc.

My mum's just bought this for DS (nearly 21 months). He loves it. We also have one of those tables(ELC)you can put water or sand in. The lid can be used as a road for the Happy Land vehicles too.

kay1981 · 22/04/2008 21:49

reading all the cool stuff everyones put, ive realised we've already got loads of "toys" for him!! He really is one of the kids too who is much happier with a pan and wooden spoon or cardboard box and playballs rather tahn a £150 jungle climber (as i was thinking about getting!)
