I give irratically (in collection tins) to just about any 'human' charity, but i don't do animal ones

spamm · 18/04/2008 13:41

Help for Heroes - dh was in the army for 22 years and many of our mates still are

Macmillan - our main charity at work, and we support them from home as well, SIL and my aunt both had serious cancers, as well as other family members

Naomi House - is reasonably local and I just think it is a great idea. Hope I never need them, but if I do, I would like to know people support them

PussinWellies · 18/04/2008 13:44

Macmillan
ActionAid (one sponsored child per birth child, though it's moved on)
Guide Dogs (lots of sight loss in family)

errrm, I think DS2 has a sponsored gorilla?

Anchovy · 18/04/2008 13:44

NSPCC - think they are truly heroic. They go to the frontline of dreadful need on a daily basis - least I can do is contribute.

Blandmum · 18/04/2008 13:46

Oh, and we do Action Aids, I'd forgotten that .

And Dh does Help for Heros

My SIL and I are currently in the process of setting up a charitable trust to raise money for more research into the kind of cancer my brother had (sarcoma - he specifically had mesenchymal chondrosarcoma). It's very rare and not much understood, extremely difficult to treat and often difficult to diagnose - with my brother there were no lumps, no blood, no obvious symptoms apart from worsening backache, sciatica and sometimes incontinence. His cancer was only diagnosed when he had to have an emergency spinal decompression and they found that the cause was an enormous tumour that was dissolving his spine. It had already spread to his lungs and elsewhere by then. MC doesn't respond well to chemo or radio, and you can only operate so much. He died just over two years after diagnosis, three weeks after his first wedding anniversary.

So now the vast majority of my 'charity cash' goes towards that, including DD and penny jar. We're currently chasing charitable status and trying to get a website set up, and once that's done we can start fundraising properly.

Sightsavers, as £20 chq at Christmas is enough to save someone's sight in the developing world so they can work.

Red Cross monthly, no partic. reason

Dh supports some Chrtistian charity in Africa each month, can't remember what it's called.
