could somebody please advise me on what the general requirements are for a hospital discharge after key hole day case surgery? What would prevent somebody from being discharged? Signs/symptoms etc. thank you

Uncontrolled pain, nausea, bleeding or no one at home.

They are very geared up to control pain and nausea, bleeding should be very rare as techniques are so good now as are checks.

Cant control no one at home though, that’s the patients responsibility.

They like you to have eaten something, drank some fluids and passed urine before

discharge.

Someone has to pick you up and they like the person to come to the ward. You can’t say they are waiting outside.

I had to walk the length of the ward and back before they would discharge me - not a day case, but I was discharged 12 hours after admission to theatre (at 2am).
I'd eaten, drunk and pee'd, but not sure if that was a requirement or not.

Satisfactory blood pressure may also be a factor. Exact requirements may vary depending on precisely what the surgery is, and other factor such as age or additional conditions.

Generally you need to have eaten, drank something, had a wee and have someone to pick you up. They literally have to come to the ward and confirm to them that they will be staying with you for the next 24/48 hours and won't be going to work etc. You also need to have pain controlled.

Certain operations may have more requirements like passing gas, walking certain distance/upstairs.

Just to clarify things. I was discharged from hospital after a keyhole surgery to remove a dermoid cyst. I was nauseous and literally vomiting when they discharged me. I couldn’t eat and obviously couldn’t tolerate food or drink as I was vomiting just before they asked me to wait outside the ward for my friend to pick me up as it was 7:30 and the ward was closing. After vomiting the first time they forced me to go the toilet to try and urinate and I literally could only produce a dribble amount of urine not enough that I would deem someone fit to go home.

So you walked to the toilet & did a wee.
Did the nausea settle once you got home?

Bonniebailey · 31/08/2024 18:17

No it didn’t. I had internal bleeding and lost 3 litres of blood I had to have emergency surgery at a different hospital.
The nurses helped me the toilet and back with my arms over their shoulders

Sounds rough OP.
Are you looking at going through PALs to look into it for you?

Bonniebailey · 31/08/2024 18:22

I have gone through pals and made a complaint but they have said I met the guidelines to be discharged and it’s on my notes my nausea was under control and I was eating and drinking which I wasn’t. At the time I was messaging friends and family telling them how nauseous I was and how I couldn’t eat and that I was vomiting so have evidence of it all however I was just wondering what the requirements actually are as they are trying to suggest urinating isn’t even a requirement to discharge somebody anymore
