I have just bought a pair of glasses for my 4 year old daughter. She's long sighted so can see quite well without them but needs to wear them so that her lazy left eye starts working properly. She is very self conscious - particularly at school and is not keen to wear them. Has anyone experienced this? Any hints about how to get her to accept them would be gratefully received!

tangerine, your daughter's sight sounds almost identical to my daughter's. My daughter was a bit funny at first but, once she realised how much better she could see with them, she has become completely dependent upon them. Also, cos her lazy eye turns inwards without them on, she is now more self-conscious wihout her glasses. There are a lot more children with glasses now, honestly, I'm sure she will settle with them soon.

Not sure if it would work for a girl, but my little nephew thinks he looks like Harry Potter with his specs on. No, he thinks he is Harry Potter with his specs on!!!

Lots of Pop stars wear glasses these days(Anastacia springs to mind, but probably your dd isn't into her yet), could you look through some magazines and find some pictures of cool people in glasses?

Have a word with the teacher and get her on side with you. My DS is supposed to wear his glasses for distance work but 3 months into term his teacher still didn't know that he had any! More and more children wear glasses now, so its not that unusual and the range of frames available makes them a fashion accessory too. I think the only way to get over the fear or dislike of wearing their glasses is perseverance. I was 13 when I first got some and I only used to wear them once I got into my lessons. I soon got fed up of putting them away and the advantages of being able to see properly made it more of a nuisance to take them off.

Hitangerine - I know your dd is only 4 but did you allow her to helppick out her glasses. I mean like the shape and the color. My ds now almost 13 got his first pair of glasses about 2 yrs ago. He wasnt thrilled but we took him and we let him pick out along with our approval the shape and color of them. We thought it might help with the situation. Hes been fine ever since.

I let my son,4, chose his glasses. I chose a few pairs that suited him and then he chose the ones that he liked the most. He wears them all the time and knows he can see better with them on.
