You can stay at Eurocamp, Berny Riviere, for about £300 pw out of school hols (inc channel crossing) and Eurodisney is an hour's drive away. OK if you don't want to spend days and days there, or if you don't want to remortgage before you go (agree that the food is overpriced and awful, though apparently the restaurants in the 'Wild West'y section are better). Our 2.5 yr old had a great day there last year, and you can also get a day or two in Paris for yourselves, too.

we took DD1 when she was 7, we loved it, and yes, it truly is a small world. The boot hill haunted house thing, astounding Go, suspend your disbelief, enjoy.

ive got goosebumps thinking of "its a small small world" takes me back to happier days

MaryAnnSingleton · 14/04/2008 21:47

it's a small world - for those of you who haven't experienced it

We've never been to Disneyworld in Florida or Disneyland in Paris, but we've been to Disneyland in Anaheim California lots of times. This was 8-10 years ago, but we stayed at a Best Western hotel directly across the street from the park entrance, so we could walk back and forth when we wanted with no additional transportation fees. Hotel was cheaper than Disney hotel, still very nice, and free hot breakfast in family restaurant next door every morning was included in hotel room price.

We had a backpack that we brought in with rice krispie bars, fruit bars, and granola bars (basically things that can be squished or scrunched a bit in the backpack and are still none the worse to eat!). We were never questioned about it, and we noticed lots of others bringing in food as well. We also bought a couple of the individual bottles of pop when we first got there, then refilled them with water from water fountains whenever we needed to and reused them the whole time we were there. We ate at the more expensive places during lunchtime, (such as the Blue Bayou by the Pirates ride), when the prices were less expensive. And ate at less expensive places at supper. We pretty much stayed at the park from opening time to closing time most days!

Definitely fastpasses are a plus. And also a good time to go on some of the more popular rides would be during fireworks shows and parades, as lots of people go to watch them.

If you end up going to California, at least the exchange rate will work in your favour!

Florida is wonderful, best holiday I have ever had with the children. When you do Disney, do it properly and you will have a wonderful time, they are exceptional and the experience is phenomenal.

The Paris one must be just absolutely awful

Er, Babblington, "The Paris one must be just absolutely awful" - why must it?

ChocolateRockingHorse · 14/04/2008 23:49

Disneyland Paris was wonderful. We went in 2005, paid for by Starlight Foundation. We had 2 nights and 2 and a bit days.. it was fantastic from the moment the train pulled in to the station where they were playing piped Disney themes.

I wanted to live in the castle! The parades were like magic; the light projections onto the castle at night like nothing I've ever seen; we were treated like royality in a restaurant on the main street (saw the first night's parade out of the upstairs window looking down - Aladdin blew a kiss at me ) and the waitress didn't speak a lot of English but she was delightful and soooo good with our disabled (then) 5 year old who was making LOTS of mess!

We had a character breakfast (well worth the money altho for us was included) and I will always remember the kids' faces when Mickey Mouse came and sat beside them - we have loads of pics.

The hotel was the poshest we've ever stayed in (although Travel Lodge is our usual so... )

We also didn't have to cue; because of our youngest's disability we were able to walk straight in the exit gates of all the rides the kids went on and had express tickets for the larger (adult) rides.

I have no idea about Florida Disneyland/world etc and am never likely to find out.. Paris one was more than we ever dreamed of and we adored it; didn't want to come home to reality.

I expected a bit of "tack" but I didn't see tack.. I saw magic.

(The kids loved it too )

Oh LEM, "It's a small, small world.." Me too!

ChocolateRockingHorse · 14/04/2008 23:51

Babblington, what you on about??! It was fabulous! See my rave below!

We can't all go to the US you know!

Earlybird · 15/04/2008 01:07

Herewego - are you considering Orlando, Anaheim or Paris?

If California, I can help as we were there a month ago, and had a fabulous time.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/04/2008 09:13

yes Babblington - don't knock Disneyland,Paris !

mrschop · 15/04/2008 16:22

DL Paris is great for kids, and much better than, eg, Legoland, but it doesn't have the 'magic' of the Florida one. We turned up at the Paris park and had our tickets taken by fairly surly assistants, whereas in Florida the staff were beaming and leaping around wearing Mickey ears. Also, Florida was spotless, whereas Paris wasn't - in fact the loos were absolutely disgusting. I meant to write to complain about that. But we're going again this year - overall it is good, and much easier/cheaper than Florida.

Countingthegreyhairs · 15/04/2008 22:16

... I just can't get over what they did to Winnie the Pooh

pofaced · 15/04/2008 22:32

Afraid we went to Florida and really not great at all... ridiculously rude staff ("have a nice day and please make your 5 year old walk an extra mile to queue"), hideous processed food ALL the time, queues even with fast pass .... if in doubt don't do it!

Some people love it but for us the scariest 6 words inthe English language are "when we were here last year.." The only bit we liked was Epcot which made me wonder why we hadn't spent the money on visiting any of the countries which had pavillions there

We went to Puy du Feu in France the previous year and it was fab in our book

In deciding to go to Disney, think seriously what kind of stuff your family enjoys the most and what your best days out have been and judge from there...
