UNIVERSAL CREDIT NEW CLAIM ADVICE

Hi, I am currently on income support, and will be migrating over to universal credit next month.

I have two children, one 23yo on PIP enhanced rate for both elements, and the other 3yo on high rate care DLA. I am a carer for my 23 yo (carers allowance). It will be a joint claim, but my partner has ill physical health and will be going for LWCWRA, as he is unable to work and it contradicts the caring roll.

When I claim, would I be able to get the carers element for my youngest and put his name down?. Or do I have to put the child I am receiving carers allowance for?. It’s all very confusing 🫤

Just trying to think ahead, as if at any time my eldest sons PIP stops (even though it shouldn’t but you know what they can be like). Then I want to be able to claim carers allowance for my 3 year old, as I would also need to be available to look after him full time too, and take him to and from appointments, nursery/school etc, without being harassed into work which is not an option for me due to both sons high care needs. My partner would not be able to physically care for either of them. I was under the impression that whoever claims the carer element for that person (and doesn’t already claim the carers allowance for them), would be the only one who could claim carers allowance for them at any point if they wished to do so?.

Or am I just over complicating things? lol 🥴

Any advice would be greatly appreciated 😊

Does your partner claim pip?

He doesn’t yet. I am going to help him with claiming PIP once we have been transferred over to universal credit.

You dont have to wait till youv'e been moved over.
I would put in a claim now as they take ages to sort out.

On uc you get carers element. If you claim carer separately it's deducted £1 for £1. So even if your oldest son stops receiving pip you'll still get the carers element from uc.

Entitled to is a good website to calculate what you'd get in uc give it a try.
