Town or village?

I am considering moving to the local town to have all the advantages of good local park, shops, cafes etc and everything within walking distance. However houses are small with small gardens and permit parking, or even no parking. Houses in the surrounding villages are more affordable and have much better gardens and parking. However public transport is quite poor with hourly buses etc

Please give advice, I am going round and round in circles! What would you prefer?

Definitely not the village. I would prefer the place with the most going on and best transport links, personally.

Village every time but sometimes, practicality has to win over desire.☹️

Always been a village dweller but when we moved a couple of years ago we knew it would be our last house so we had to be practical thinking 10-20yrs ahead.
Edge of a small town but it has busses, doctors, vets etc, in fact just about everything we could need.

I like being in a town, and my garden is small but I have parking, that was a prerequisite, we have 5 vehicles

Have you got kids? We lived in a village when the kids were primary school age and it was lovely, knew all the parents, real community feel. But it was very limiting, public transport was atrocious, they'd have had no independence and there is a real issue with delinquency there presumably due to so little to do. We moved to a town for the teen years and it is much more appropriate for them, I grew up in a town and loved it and DH grew up rurally and hated it.

If we didn't have kids, I'd probably live in a nice village close to a good sized town or city.

I would go village because I drive and have no kids
If you have kids I would say town as there are more amenities without having to be driven everywhere

Town dweller (but feels like a village). My non driving sister / me if no car / friends can walk to my house from the station, picking up supper on the way. I can walk out for dinner / a drink, have enough neighbours to generally be able to find a babysitter who doesn't need dropping off.
If you are looking at somewhere with residents permits (I live on a residents/ visitors street) then visit at the times you would normally come in and out to get a realistic assessment of how much of a problem it actually is (not too much for me).

I do drive and all my children are grown up, I have always lived in a village, but I am in the same position as Nourishinghandcream and my next house will be my last. Upset to let go of the driveway and big garden though! I would like the convenience of being able to walk to the train station, swimming pool, shops etc but am struggling to let go of the driveway in particular!

I guess ut depends on the street and whether there’s plenty of parking or not. I wouldn’t move to a street where I had to fight for parking every day, and/ or have to park away from my house. I’ve had this before, and carrying shopping was a real pain.
