Flanders and Swann, At the Drop of a Hat. It was I beleive a bit old-fashioned when I was a child. I borrowed a CD from my dad for the sake of nostalgia and my DCs discovered it. Now it's on my MP3 player and we have to listen to it all the time in the car. They keep coming out with 'I'm a gnu, how do you do' to random people, and other choice phrases such as' Bloody January again'.

Weird .

oh god my ds got into this aged about 8 from a friend.

Have your dc's tried Spike Jones and his City Slickers? was very popular in my house with lots of hilarious mouth noises for small boys to imitate. I have my late father to thank for introducing this to ds when he was about 5, we listened to it for years [seemed like it]. Later discovered he has aspergers, does this account for the over and over and over......?

SoMuchToBits · 12/04/2008 21:36

I expect my ds would like Flanders & Swann - must get a CD.....

barbarianoftheuniverse · 12/04/2008 21:52

My dcs sing the armadillo's love song, substituting any animal we happen to pass in a field (alpacas 2 days ago which didn't really scan).

OrmIrian · 14/04/2008 20:06

So glad there are more of you with freakish children here. The humour is gentle, occasionally a little un-PC and so old-fashioned but mine happily listen and laugh hysterically in the very same day they have hooted at the Simpsons movie.

I love Flanders and Swann

Ds was taught Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud at school

Your children might also like (screened) Tom Lehrer. Ds is especially fond of Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, Vatican Rag and New Math.

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 08:10

Almost certainly Marina! I hadn't thought of him

Ooooh I loved songs like this when I was little. My grandad had a record of such songs - by lots of different people. The gnu song was on there, as was I'm a pink toothbrush, the hippo one, one where Norman Wisdom just laughs continuously through the whole song, bit of Morecambe and Wise.

'Twas fab!

welliemum · 15/04/2008 08:14

Oooh, yes, we like 'A Transport of Delight" as well as the other ones mentioned.

Great stuff for little children (and us!)

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 08:17

Grandad, popsycal!! .

Now I feel old.

sorry - am 34...not that young

Hallgerda · 15/04/2008 10:32

Don't get The Bestiary if you don't want your children to embarrass you with a loud chorus of "Pee Po Belly Bum Drawers" in a public place, OrmIrian.

(DS1 did so in a National Trust tea room at the age of two )

fireflytoo · 15/04/2008 10:35

I had a similar experience with Queen in my house. My dds (11 and15) abhor all my music. Then we saw Ella enchanted and they loved the last song. I said...oh I have that on a record at home. And since then Queen is rocking again in this household.

I will definitely go and find this as it is just the sort of thing we love.

wilbur · 15/04/2008 10:35

For older kids who like comedy monologues (no songs) try Bob Newhart. He is hilarious, and my sister I and I used to cry with laughter at his Driving Instructor and Bus Driver's School when we were about 10/12. Some of the stuff is a bit dated, although his Conversation with Walter Raleigh is still a fab anti-smoking piece.

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 10:38

Too late hallgerda The only word that they recognised as even slightly rude was 'bum'.

wilbur, dh "did" The Bus Driver for me on our first date. I still married him, eventually . We love Bob Newhart and I think his influence is very underrated in the UK.
Had completely forgotten about Pee, Po, Belly, Bum, Drawers dd would love this, I know!
And of course The Bonzo Dog Band.
Can also recommend some of Half Man, Half Biscuit as well. David Wainwright's Feet and All I Want for Christmas (is a Dukla Prague Away Strip) are more favourites of ours.
Am wondering whether ds is ready for Randy Newman...too scathing perhaps

Hallgerda · 15/04/2008 10:47

The bedstead men song is a must for anyone involved in conservation work

Whenever I see a large object dumped in a waterway, I look out for the alternating prints of boot and sock...

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 10:47

DH has some HalfManHalfBiscuit somewhere... must look it out.

Stephanie Flanders (as in evil career woman snaffled great BBC job while pregnant, pace the Daily Mail ) is the daughter of Michael Flanders btw

IdrisTheDragon · 15/04/2008 10:48

I love Flanders and Swann (and I'm 32 ). I love the bus song. And Mud glorious Mud. And of course I've lost my horn.

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 10:49

He has a horrible child ?

The horn song is a favourite too. I think they must have heard it with my dad as I don't have it anywhere. Must find...

IdrisTheDragon · 15/04/2008 10:49

ooh look

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 10:50

Thanks Idris but I have all of those. I need 'At the drop of another hat' I think.

Blimey, Marina, your dh must have a good memory! Little bits of Bob Newhart sneak back to me at times - I have introduced dh to it, but he still looks at me blankly when I parrot "he banged the kid with the door" from The Kruschev Landing whenever we injure one of the dcs.
