Hello

Me and my partner have broken up - he doesn't want to be with me anymore. Whenever ask anything he doesn't like he breaks up with me and causes a huge argument instead of talking about it.

Anyways he's told me I need to move out asap and find sonowhere else to live. I'm not on the mortgage for the house but we have two children.

He said it's his house and that I need to go or stay somewhere else until I find somewhere

Do I have any rights to stay as it's my childrens home?

I feel really crappy but I'm struggling to find anywhere & I feel it's very wrong when this is supposed to be mine and my childrens home aswell as his Alrhough im not on mortgage.

Thank you

Why do they have to be confined to marriage though? Families come in more shapes and varieties now and legal protections should be enhanced for people who choose to be committed but not marry.

Because that's what marriage is. It's a legal contract where both parties agree to be joined as a unit. People often don't want to mar, including some women, and shouldn't have the legal responsibilities imposed on them without willingly entering into it.
It's very foolish to have children with someone and not save or remain financially independent in some way. And this is the result. Again this isn't a pop at the OP but a general comment.

@stormingnorman... Not to detail the thread but there are plenty of us who choose not to marry so that we can protect our assets. Marriage and its rights need to remain opt in not by default.

But I choose not to be married because I want to protect my assets. I've worked hard to pay off my mortgage, house is in my name. I want the freedom to have a partner live with me, without worrying about him being entitled to my home.

If I wanted, or we needed to share, we would marry.

Is he saying he wants you to go but leave the kids in the house with him?!

Motheranddaughter · 19/07/2024 20:26

Its important that people who want to protect their assets can do so
Dont have children unless you have the protection of marriage /civil partnership or can support yourself

Call your council and present as homeless, they should find you emergency accomodation tonight.

I will probably get shot down like the devil himself but leave the children where they are, he's their father, his mother is their childcare and it's their home. You don't need to put them through hell. Especially if this is something he does regularly. Maybe it is time you actually left and let him see that you will leave him with the children to care for when you can't.

Call the homeless service though. Stop letting him throw you out. Get your own place, with your children. But don't put them in homeless emergency accomodation for a night.

How old are the children, what custody and visitation are you both looking for in the future. Do you have friends or family you can stay with or even mil if you have a good relationship with her

This is why people get married.

Do you actually think they are all romantics?

I'm not married to my dp, but have done everything to cover myself and my assets should anything happen, joint mortgage, written agreements with solicitors etc.

I don't believe in marriage and it makes me sad/angry that so many women leave themselves so vulnerable, even if they are married it happens to where women give up everything and have to start over when it goes sour.
