It is wrong to shave a 4yr old girl's head isn't it?

I did her hair on Sunday, she was completely clear and had been all Easter Holidays.

Go to do it tonight, two HUGE lice and I think over 100 eggs

Nitty gritty gone awol so 1 1/2 HOURS spent picking individual eggs out.

DD was miserable by the end, as was I. I normally comb through each bathtime, and then a proper sit down check at the weekend but was lax during the week this week because she was exhausted from first week back.

I have my mum muttering that I should be treating her (lyclear no chemical stuff???), but I still don't see the point because I will still have to do the same amount of combing etc

Fed up.

If she keeps getting it, she is probably getting immune to the chemicals anyway.

I feel for you, my sister had this with one of her kids - hpw frustrating.

Try slathering her hair in conditiner (leave it on at nursery if necessary - she can have her hair tied up). You still need to brush them out though or it will continue forever.

Buy some tea tree and lavendar essential oils. Once you have cleared her head, fill a spray bottle with 20 drops tea tree and about 200mls water, and spray her hair with it each morning before going out. And puta drop of lavendar on your finger and rub it all along her neck. both deter them nasty things fro climbing on! I have heard that neem oil kills them, so you might be able to use that mixed with baby shampoo or something mild - your health food shop will have that - they might even have neem shampoo or soap (which you could easily use as a treatment, even though unconventional as a shampoo!)

You need to treat her hair I think after 5 days again as thatis when the eggs hatch (thick conditioner not rinsed out should do it again, as they can't grip the hair) - and brush out.

Good luck!

Yup, it is conditioner and combing that I do atm. I think she is just one of those kids that has the right smelling skin or something.

I have a jar with the tea tree in water and I brush it on as I do her hair every morning (need it wet to tie up well). I hadn't heard of the lavender bit though, will try that!

My girls had nits for months, we tried all sorts of things, I was sick to death of the whole malarky.

In the end we got rid of them with the last resort - a single treatment of industrial strength chemicals (Prioderm - it stinks), and I continued using Nitty Gritty prevention spray for ages afterwards.

I hope I never see another nit comb...

ismisemama · 12/04/2008 12:09

yep, i had to resort to proderm too - whwt a stink but it's the only thing that has workrd for me.
Don't think this is an option for kids with asthma or eczema though..

i feel your pain.

DD has very long dark hair and she just seems to have a head that is the nit version of eutopia.

It is so bad she actually checks her dollies for nits.

Where do you get this prioderm from? is it over teh counter or would i need a prescription?

castille · 12/04/2008 16:07

It's available over the counter in pharmacies in France (where we are), so I presume you can just walk in and buy it in the UK too.

It made us cough it's so strong...
