Can anyone advise and recommend if possible pls
I am based in north Essex

Im in my early 40's & for medical reasons, i don't drive but it is now ok to

I want to get my license as soon as possible

  1. is that possible?
  2. can I Lear to drive in a short period say (1 month or less)?
  3. a there any intensive driving schools at all?

Also, AIBU to be embarrassed that I can't drive & don't have a license (although it for medical reasons) yes, it's held my life back in a massive way as I have no freedom etc

  • AIBU to be thinking I don't wanna learn to drive in my local environment or town (I will prefer to go to the surrounding villages) I am embarrassed that people will see that I am just learning to drive at me age 🙈

DP is driving instructor and generally he doesn’t do intensive as it leads to poor focus and fatigue.
There are schools that do it although I’d have thought taking time to process everything would be better, and that goes for everyone. It’s nothing to do with your age.

He teaches people of varying ages. Oldest was 82 and she passed after 3 attempts.
You’re definitely not old for learning and no one will bat an eyelid.

As for preferring surrounding villages, you have to stick to the test route which will include town.

@User016529 thanks for the reply

The reason I said to learn in the surrounding villages is so that no one I know in town sees me 🙈

If people see you, their reaction is likely to be positive as in “ good for you 👋” rather than “omg, look at her lol”

Give yourself a pat on the back.
Most that DP teaches are not school leavers. Many are in their 40’s,50’s and 60’s.

Really, no one cares,OP.
It’s something you feel about yourself as if you have somehow failed but there is really no need to feel like this.

Well done for wanting to do this !

Best theory test app is the Theory 4 in 1. It costs a bit (I think a fiver?) but it has all the questions that can come up and a pass guarantee - if you fail the theory after completing their steps you get your money back. I used it religiously and got 100%!

Also, you absolutely have nothing to be embarrassed about! People learn at all sorts of ages. I'm learning now in my 30s. No experience with intensive courses but I feel I learn the best over a long period of time. Good luck :)

Seeline · 14/07/2024 10:06

Yes - agree with Theory 4 in 1 app. That was all DD used.

Honestly, I think you're being mad not wanting to learn in your local area. It's much easier when you know the local roads etc.
Honestly, no one will notice you learning! And even if they do, they'll think well done you! Be proud and embrace it. My mum learnt at 48 (hadn't been able to afford a car up until then). She passed first time and is still perfectly capably driving at 87!

WhiteNettle · 14/07/2024 10:44

dont be embarrassed that you’re learning - be proud! Several of my colleagues / friends have learned in their 30s to 50s.

Learn in your local town with a test centre, so yes, if there’s a test centre in the town you live learn there - partly to assist with you passing, and partly so you’ve practiced where you’ll be driving when you have passed. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed who is in a instructors car.

If I were you I might go for a couple of 2-hour lessons a week, rather than an intensive block. Is there anyone else you can practice with between lessons?

good luck and best wishes - well done!

RightOnTheEdge · 14/07/2024 11:03

Sorry, I can't answer the intensive lesson question OP but just want to say that I get how you feel.

I am about to start learning to drive next week and I'm 47. I feel like not driving has held me back too but I just couldn't afford to learn, and actually still have no idea how I'm going to pay 😭😫 but I need to get it done!
All the photos on the driving instructors SM are of young people passing, and I feel like the only person my age who can't drive.

It's great that you can finally start driving and your medical issues are not holding you back anymore!
Good luck!
