Surrey MNetters - another relocation query

DH now works in Godalming and we are down on the south coast so it makes sense to move closer to his work and cut down on his commute.

We have moved around the UK a lot but never ventured into Surrey so we have no idea what it is like.

We have a toddler and a baby and I am after a house which is walking distance to a town or some shops (newsagents, post office, corner shop, excuse to go for a walk and get out of the house), toddler groups and playschools but which isn't on a main road (cats) or on a pub route.

Looking for Victorian/Edwardian houses. Whenever I do searches on primelocation etc. I only seem to find 1950s 'Good Life' type detached homes.

I have driven through Godalming once on the way to Guildford but can't remember much about it. I know some mumsnetters live near Haslemere and Guildford and any information would be welcome.

TIA

Galaxy

Park doesn't do it justice

Gem for park read acres and acres of beautiful managed woodland.

And if you looked at the North side of Farnham in particular Heath end and Upper Hale you could walk into town through the park.

There is also an excellent catholic school.

You're right LGJ of course! And another obvious benefir id that you know there's 2 mumsnetters living her (not that we've met each other).

Oh and has a good Farmers Market once a month (Couldn't resist that one gymjunkie)

galaxy · 06/01/2005 14:02

Ooh ooh I live between godalming and haslemere. The schools are great in my village. Housing is very mixed, all look different to each other, mainly older style, a few modern ones.

Take no notice of ks's hatred of surrey it's good in the sw part

I will wait for the wrath of ks to descend on me via email now

lou33 · 06/01/2005 15:10

i live in the village mext to milford, it's smaller and nicer, but milford has more facilites.

Gem13 · 06/01/2005 15:17

Hello lou33. Glad you are safe and well. I don't think we've spoken before so didn't feel I could add to the thread about you but I'm been following the threads and I'm very pleased you're home.

What does your village offer? Is there enough for me to get out of the house without having to put the children in the car? A post office would be great...

milford would be better for that sort of thing. That's the closest po. Witley {my village), has an infant school, a junior school a secondary school on the border with milford, a newsagent, off licence, local hairdresser, gp, couple of pubs, few small play areas, that's about it. Milford, as I said is bigger, more shops and stuff, but still small if you are coming from a large town. I love godalming though. ANd guildford is great for shopping, although i wouldnt like to live in the centre (sorry jmg)

Gem13 · 06/01/2005 15:31

My need for a Post Office is a bit sad but I can't believe how many times I need to go and post a birthday parcel, airmail letter, eBay parcel, etc. and all the local ones near here have shut.

I reckon Lou33 probably lives less than a mile a away from me. That's how close Milford and Witley are! I have a friend in Witley and it takes me 20 minutes to walk to her house with pushchair!!

Anyway - Milford has a post office, chemist, butchers/fishmongers, off-license, chinese take away place, video shop, dry cleaners, infant school (4-7 years) - feeder school to Chandlers CofE in Witley, church, park, huge farm shop, massive garden centre, couple of pubs, fish & chip shop, tea shop, florist....umm can't think of anything else for now!

We also need Merlot on here - she lives in Elstead - which is another nice village around in between Godalming and Farnham......

galaxy · 06/01/2005 16:00

Not much in Elstead though in the way of shops (chinese is good value though)

Gosh theres a mumsnetter in Elstead, thats where the dreaded parents live ( well some of the time ). They are actually very nice, just wouldnt like to be near to them.

Elstead does have a poodle parlour - not a total negative on the shops...
