Hi there, my dd has always been a slow eater but now it is getting beyond a joke, some nights she can take 1.5 hours to eat her dinner. I know she is missing out on either playtime or all of her lunch in school becuase of this too. Has anyone had this experience and what can I do??

No afters she (yes, my dd also!) doesn't get on with it / finish by a certain time.
No talking during the meal.

What is your dd doing when she's not eating?
EAting slow is good for them, but not if she takes it to ridiculous extreme.

She is chewing when she is not eating. She doesnt just sit and stare into space or anything, it is physically taking her that length of time to EAT her meal.

Leave her to it. If that's how she eats, then that's how she eats. I don't think it would be beneficial to make her hurry her food. Eating slowly and chewing your food is something that we all should do but generally don't as we are rushing from one thing to another.
Does it bother her that she misses playtime? Is there any reason that she might want to miss playtime?

could you put a timer on for 45 mins or so (therefore cutting in half her meal times... not ideal for school but that could come later)

Any food left after 45m will be thrown out? IMO 45m for a child's size meal is plenty of time for relaxed eating.

Are her portions too big - is she struggling with the amount?

Mine's the same age and does stare into thin air and not chew. Takes anything from 45mins to haour and a half for tea.. LORDY do I get bored sat at that dinner table most nights!

I'm an adult and I eat that slowly. Leave her to it, I say
