at KM's comment but according to a friend in the know, this is predominantly the attitude amongst benefit recipients as the amounts they receive are very low and certainly mean a basic lifestyle unless illegally supplemented.

Is it any wonder that benefit fraud is rife and benefit levels are so low.

People would have more respect for those on benefits if the vast majority of benefit fraud was detected with the help of so called "snitches" because there would be a much greater chance of the recipient being a genuinely worthy case or honest receipient.

The system needs reforming. Why do we let people opt out of crappy jobs then give them (low levels of) benefit instead and import foreign labour to do the crappy work ?

I don't care if you don't fancy doing factory/production line work/agricultural work, you shouldn't be able to claim benefit instead just like it shouldn't be possible to have 7 children by 5 fathers and expect the government to bail you out financially and social services pick up the pieces when it all goes horribly wrong. It just encourages social irresponsibility and fecklessness causing other people, usually children, to suffer.

Desiderata · 08/04/2008 16:17

So, what you you have happen to the seven children by five different fathers, then?

Throw them to the dogs?

It's a fait accomplis once the children are born. They need looking after by someone, don't they?

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 08/04/2008 16:20

Okay - kid run over a bit extreme...

Coming from Africa, where there is NO benefit of any kind and abject poverty and politicians doing bugger all about it other than lining already lined pockets, the red mist descends when the words 'benefit' and 'thief' are put together...

jumpingbeans · 08/04/2008 16:25

Oh yes, and i would tell them i was going to do it.

beaniesteve · 08/04/2008 16:28

"yes. I would report any crime."

if you saw someone speeding would you report it?

nervousal · 08/04/2008 16:33

re "its none of my business" - yes it is - where do you think the money paid to benefit cheats comes from??? I have no issue with people who are entitled to benefits getting every penny they deserve, but no-one should get a penny more than that.

They are stealing. The money they steal could be going to something else.

Yes.

If I were dead sure.

I dobbed someone in who was NOT entitled to benefits at all as a condition of their visa and who was dumb enough to boast about claiming them in writing, in addition to reams of stuff about how they had a thousands in savings in their home country.

I did because it earns people who claim and really have need to do so the label of 'scrounger' because of thieves like this, and I think that's wrong.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2008 16:47

If there were such a thing as karma in the world, a whole lot of starving children in this world would eat.

beaniesteve · 08/04/2008 17:09

Karma! don't even get me started. The woman I work with spends her whole time bitching about the 'bad' things other people to and wishing bad Karma on them, makes me wonder exactly what kind of Karma she should be expecting.

It's a load of toss!

DirtySexyMummy · 08/04/2008 17:32

Unfortunately expat, thats not really what Karma means.

It is unfair that there are starving children. Its not Karma

expatinscotland · 08/04/2008 17:38

Well, I don't believe in karma any more than I believe in God.

Or benefits cheats getting off with it whilst everyone get labelled a scrounger because of people like this.

duomonstermum · 08/04/2008 17:39

i reported someone 3 times for the same thing and fa was done about it so whats the point. btw it was someone i knew so i know that nothing was done. i have no prob with someone earning a bit extra over xmas and stuff but it makes my blood boil when someone takes the piss.

It would be my civic duty

As with the people who cheat the taxman of course

jingleyjen · 08/04/2008 20:09

I would, in the specific circumstances you have mentioned.

I would not as a matter of course though, it would depend on the situation.

Yes, I would, if I were absolutely sure of the facts. Mainly because there are many people out there claiming benefits and sticking to the rules and it's blatantly unfair. And because I would report any other crime, again if I were sure of my facts.

The thing is, I work in housing benefit and occasionally people will ring in and report someone for fraud but reasonably often it transpires that we already know about the extra earnings or whatever and it's just someone stirring.

I would too, its easy to do and nobody has to know where the info came from. That money could be spent on hospitals, schools etc - not so that somebody can have yet another windscreen tv or fancy car.

Our benefits system is a shambles and needs over hauling. Some new systems are coming in in 2010 but further reforms are needed so that benefits are only claimed by those who genuinely need them where they are physically unable to work. Not those who are "too good" to work in a minimum wage job.
