I have an 8 year old and she can be quite heavy footed, she loves running around and playing. Since 2020 she's been complaining about my daughter banging. Im constantly telling my daughter to stop running and jumping inside, but as children do they don't stop. She doesn't bang too early and she doesn't bang very late, she's also out of the flat most of the day. My neighbour has a young child and a teen so she knows how noisy kids can be. I have carpets with underlay in every room but theres nothing else i can do. I hear her shouting and banging a lot as well, i told her before and she said life isn't fair. How can she say that and still complain about my daughter. I want to move out but i cant afford to and this area is pretty good. What can i do? Its stressing me and my daughter out.

At 8 years old she shouldn't be running around inside Take her outside to let off steam.

PeonySeasons · 15/06/2024 19:24

Yeah, at 8 she should be able to understand and follow the instructions of no running and jumping in the house....

Does she get to run riot outside the house most days at a park or in a garden? I'm assuming you don't have a garden to be fair.

It's absolutely horrific living with the loud noises of other people and a running and jumping 8yo will be making a LOT of noise which will be awful to be honest. I'd also hate it.

You have the ability to change this.

So your neighbour is telling your family to keep quite . But she doesn't want to do anything about her own noise.

What type of flat do you live in ? Is it a conversion. A purpose build old build /new build?

Sometimes carpet and underlay is not enough have you looked into other types of sound proofing .

She turns 8 tomorrow also im pretty sure she has ADHD still on the list waiting to be assessed. So all she does is runs. I tell her to stop running and to walk but she forgets easily.

Her kids and she is very noisy as well but she dosnt seem to care about that. I think she might have ADHD so its hard for her to understand that. Yeah she gets to let off steam outside a lot.

Everytine she complains tell her life isn't fair and noise is a part of living in a flat. Don't make your child be quiet. She's allowed to use her home. I think as long as she isn't being noisy to be malicious then it's reasonable noise. You have done everything you can to minimise the noise. The only other thing I can suggest is slippers.

My kids are a simlar age. If I took them to a park or what ever to run of steam they would chill out quietly for maybe 10/20 mins then they would be running around again.

Your neighbour is doing her thing you do yours.

Yeah ive started getting her to wear slippers but who wants to wear slippers when its warm. It going to be even harder when the weather warms up.

Well when she used to complain to the council about the banging she made stuff up like she heard a drill early hours. I didn't even have a drill also i apparently kept putting the washer on too early or too late. But now things have settled down a bit shes told me she cant hear my washer, same with the hoover.

Honestly ignore her.

On my council website there's a bit about noise complaints. It says they do not take on noise complaints over , children playing , babies crying. Daily living noise and no complaints due to poor sound insulation abd also no complaints for a one of party.

Maybe your council has something similar?

Unfortunately not, I've had council round telling me to stop her running about. They also dont believe a word i said. I even got a doorbell camera coz when this first started my daughter was 4 and it was during covid when none of us were allowed out. She came up as soon as I opened my door she started shouting and swearing at me while she was holding her baby, when i shut the door to ignore her she nearly kicked it in. I reported her but they ignored me.
