Two Questions

I have two unanswered questions:

  1. You know if a farms products are classed as organic, would they still be classed as organic if the farm were right beside a motorway/industrial area? I live near the M5 and fairly close to Avonmouth and there are loads of farms right next to the motorway (which is often stationary) and within spitting distance of factories. If these farms were organically rearing, would the products be classed as organic despite high levels of pollutants?
  1. Are pinenuts classed as nuts? What about coconuts? So if you are avoiding nuts in weaning would you avoid these? Only asking cos have been avoiding pesto and thai green curry but think would be OK? Baby likes tasty/spicey things so would be fine on that front.

I don't think pinenuts are nuts and I don't think coconuts are either. I think yes on the organic farm thing.

I think.

  1. I think the Soil Association come over and inspect your premises and test your soil before you can call yourself organice, but I don't kow how the minutiae would work

2)no idea but pesto is bloody salty unless you make your own

Interesting about SA, not thought of that!

I had not thought about the salt issue, will have to look into that as don't make own as a rule.

  1. It doesn't automatically rule them out of the running for organic status but could go against them.

  2. Pinenuts - avoid
    Coconuts OK

Coconut oil is used in products that are made in a 'nut free' classified environment, pinenuts are not permitted on such premises.

Coconuts are not nuts in the 'allergy' sense, they are 'drupes'. Pine-nuts are coniferous seeds.
I have a nut allergy and although many people wil say that it's ok to eat pine-nuts - they do set off my allergy.

stuffitllama · 07/04/2008 23:23

I didn't know that about pine-nuts sorry for bad advice I'm so glad someone corrected me!

I put them in cakes and will have to remember.. one more thing not for class consumption..

WestCountryLass · 07/04/2008 23:24

I have taken note.

Should have asked here first as have asked health visotors (3 kids and all HV seen have not known) but trust someone at MN to know

Joash - I believe they do set off the allergy in some nut allergy sufferers hence the ban in nut-free premises.

My nut allergy is wierd anyway. Allergic to just about every nut except hazel nuts - figure that one out.
