Anyone else hate the smell of unwashed hair?

I'm constantly surprised by how many people don't wash their hair enough. We all have to wash our hair with differing frequencies. My friend only does hers once a week and it's OK. Yet I keep coming across people with revolting smelling hair. In theatres and cinemas, on public transport, and often even in the street, if the breeze catches the scent. Does it really smell so bad, or am I just hyper sensitive to the smell?

Yes, I hate the smell of dirty hair and will move as far away from it as possible. It’s not a ‘Mumsnet thing’, it’s a real thing! Just wash your stinky hair for god’s sake.

NotSoHotMess24 · 11/06/2024 23:25

I do smell it :( Have always had a very strong sense of smell though - a blessing and a curse!

I wash my hair every day, or at the very least dry-shampoo it, as would hate to risk myself smelling like that 😬.

Amybelle88 · 11/06/2024 23:39

This never fails to amaze me - how can you not smell it? Same sentiment for people who go out and just smell in general. Soap costs 50p - there's no excuse.

Some posters on MN should have careers as sniffer dogs.

I am cursed with an incredible sense of smell and I’ve often said I could be a sniffer dog 😁
I see the eye-rollers are on the thread. Every time, we get the ones who think “well I can’t smell that smell, so the people who say they can smell it so strongly it upsets them are RIDICULOUS”.
I’m hearing impaired and I understand all too well that other people can detect sounds that I can’t. Why can’t people accept that it’s the same with other senses?

Once more I am delighted not to be as dainty and fastidious as the average mumsnetter.

I live in London, I work in a hospital, I am around people of all types every day, and the only time I have smelled any of their hair is when we are packed in like sardines on the tube, and even then it didn't horrify me.

This is like the threads where people insist they can tell whether someone has their period by the smell when they walk past.

Love this!!

I'm a teacher and can smell dirty/unwashed children and parents easily..

Generally there is no pandemic of adults with stinky hair!

Ok so now I am paranoid.... I only wash my hair once a week as it's frizzy and fluffy and needs a couple of days after washing to settle down.... Am I an old skank?

Terrible for your hair washing it daily!

Nope you are looking after your hair properly for its type!

Depends on your hair type and how much care you give it with things like hair masks and scalp treatments. Mine has been washed daily since I was a young teen because of the amount of exercise I do. Because of that I do a lot of treatments. At over 50 my hair is long and glossy and very, very thick. Not in any way damaged.

@NotSoHotMess24 I wash mine every day. I'm lucky because it dries quickly. 😀

Daily washing doesn't seem to have done my hair any harm either.

No, I took care to point out that I knew some people, like my friend, could wash their hair less than others 😁

I can smell dirty hair a mile off. It’s always people that have hair that gets greasy.

I can also smell people that don’t shower in the morning.

I bet you can't

Me too.. they are so weird

shearwater2 · 12/06/2024 00:34

I can't say as ever notice this unless I was close enough to almost have my nose in someone's hair. The only time I can smell others is when they have bad bo/stale sweat in the gym- I can smell some men from the next treadmill, the stinky fuckers. And smokers, I really hate the smell of smoke in hair and clothes. There are two smokers at work and they stink when they come in from smoking and when I have meetings with them.

Other than that, if you can smell my hair you are definitely too close to me.

Expo23 · 11/06/2024 20:39

Yes. It can be overwhelming. Once at the hairdresser there was a man who came for a cut but not a wash, so they spritzed his hair to damp it then dried it off at the end. I discreetly sat and smelled my coffee as the dryer heating his unwashed hair/scalp was not good. Another time I sat smelling the perfume on my sleeve and eventually moved as the woman next to me was having some highlights done but when they sat her under the heat lamp the smell from her scalp was way too much, she must not have washed her hair for at least a week.

Highlights take better on unwashed hair. Not really dirty hair but unwashed for two-three days.

I have on buses - can’t understand why they can’t wash their hair more often like the rest of us - or just use dry shampoo-

Some people just can't though . I have a friend who lives alone and physically can't wash her own hair . She can't use dry shampoo due to sensitive scalp . She has it washed professionally each week .

MrsWilmaFlintstone · 12/06/2024 00:49

TBH, I can’t say I’ve really noticed it myself. But I bet they’re the same people who believe a weekly shower or bath for their children is sufficient.
