as me and dh just had a brief explanation of how babies are made with dd1+2 (dd1 asked, finally, i was expecting to be asked 3years ago tbh), but i really wasnt prepared and she wanted answers there and then.

i am thinking mummy laid an egg, but is that too young/old for both?

we still have the whole menstruation thing to cover as well. though had a funny incidence with dd3 in ikea last week, who asked what the tampom dispenser was for. i told her it was for when mummies have blood coming out, she looked all serious, then as i opened the door she said v v v loudly 'do you have blood coming out of your bottom' pmsl!

oh we found a fab one, hold on
I don't rate that mummy laid an egg AT ALL
I think the pictures are grotesque and tbh it is full of odd / misleading information

DJCod · 06/04/2008 20:17

just tell em
why do oyu need a book

FrannyandZooey · 06/04/2008 20:18

I liked this one very much

spot on for a 5 y o IMO
might be slightly too young for an 8 y o but all the facts are there

does not deal with menstruation but I have a feeling there is another one about growing up in a bit more detail? will look

because they respond better with books and ask more questions cod. i'd rather do that then blunder through. i know books worked well for me as a child as well.

this is the next one which explains periods etc but looks more suitable for slightly older children

I don't know cod, I felt a book helped a lot
I kept waiting for it to come up in conversation and it never did, so 'oh let's read this interesting looking book together' provided a good opener

we did obviously talk about as well but this got us started
and I think if they have a book they can look at it quietly by themselves after the talking has finished, and come back and ask you questions if they want to

misdee · 06/04/2008 20:24

although i do remember my dad explaiing about the egg in my mums tummy and his seed, which was smaller than a grain of sand, and he had a tiny grain of sand in his hand as he talked about it. i must've been about 4 or 5, so very young.

am checking that book now f+z

all oyu need to do i haev a baby tbh

FrannyandZooey · 06/04/2008 20:28

I think most children this age know where they come from, but not necessarily how they got there though cod

the nuts and bolts of sex is often where people get a bit lost as to how to explain properly to a young child

misdee · 06/04/2008 20:28

i havent yet told them they are having another brother or sister yet, so i want to be more prepared to answer all questions. they did ask tonight how babies grow as well, so i did a quick google to show a baby full term in mums tum diagram and explained all that lot as well, including how babies come out.

how much info do i give them though cod? i think 5 is too young to be going into al lthe mechanics of sex etc. i dont want to scare the poor kids.

dd2 did ask if she coul.d be a boy, i told her if she was a boy she would have a penis, she said 'whats a penis' i said ' a willy'

'no way!!' from dd2, dd1 laughing like mad, and dd2 has decided she wil lstay as agirl. lol.

I saw a book where couples were at it in all sorts of weird places - including whilst parachuting! I thought that might confuse matters, somewhat!

misdee · 06/04/2008 20:35

lol, maybe thats mummy laid an egg, i think extreme sex may be too much lol.

MmeCellophane · 06/04/2008 20:48

Space hoppers, lol! I couldn't put it back on the shelf fast enough!

Back in about 1982 my mother bought me a copy of The Body Book by Clare Rayner, which covers all sorts of biological things, including reproduction. Although it made me giggle, it was pretty good and informative, so might be worth a look.
