Starting at Wembley ending up at the 02 in Greenwich, lots going on in London town - check out the website www.London.gov.uk.

Me and Maureen might check it out with our girls.

I am a social and political outcast obviously.

I'm sure the Chinese people aren't stupid and know that there is an outside world that opposes the treatment of Tibet but really, not supporting our athletes isn't going to change anything is it?

I was so impressed with Francesca Martinez when she announced on Channel 4 news she wouldn't be carrying a torch after all because of what is happening in Tibet right now. She spoke with such integrity and intelligence.

The international community turn a blind eye to appalling abuses of human rights so often for the sake of money and promotion.

Florida I'm afraid I find your reasoning a bit fuddling to be honest.

However, as I said, I'm sure it will be an excellent day out for you and your family.

Access to unbiased news reports is not widespread in China Kbear. So it's not really about calling the Chinese people stupid.
Here's some vox pops from Chinese citizens about their view on Tibet Chinese opinions

And here's some more info about the background to the problem

Opinions do differ about the reasons for the timing of these uprisings - I think the Chinese are quite right to assert that Tibetan insurgents are trying to humiliate them in the run-up to the Olympics.

I don't think anyone's an outcast for wanting to go and see the Olympic torch being carried through London. Ours is a free country thank goodness

Maybe someday we'll be able to say the same for China and Tibet.

FloridaKbear · 05/04/2008 17:52

WTF is fuddling?

Fuddling is a slightly joky word meaning throwing into confusion. I can't see the thread of your reasoning, is what I meant.

Hope you lot never get a Chinese takeaway, never buy Chinese electrical equipment, check your labels and trainers for country of origin or buy a seaside ornament - we've all supported China and made it the country it's become in one way or another. Boycotting a bit of flag waving and cheering in London ain't gonna change it.

Marina you are absolutely right, no-one will be punished in any way for expressing themselves in word or action, nor should they be. And anyone who wants to support the Olympics in any way this year is free to do so and will enjoy doing so. If only it were like that all over the world.

Funny to think that yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King.

guiltyascharged · 05/04/2008 17:56

I have no problem with other people going to watch, and have a nice day out putting aside the fact that people in Tibet are not having any nice days at all.
The thing is with the people of China they get fed tons of shits and nothing else and if someone tells you black is white and you see nothing to say otherwise you will believe it in the end.

No19 · 05/04/2008 17:57

Most Chinese takeaways near me, if they are run by Chinese people at all, are run by Chinese people who left China, or whose parents left China, with great difficulty, because they couldn't bear it there.

I don't buy tat made in Chinese sweatshops though.

In traditional MN style "I pick my battles" and this isn't one of mine so I will be having a lovely day tomorrow and will be signing off from this thread now before I get even more fuddled and will stick to baking and furry kittens and leave clever people like you to debate for me.
