eidsvold · 01/01/2005 04:32

asda, tesco, bhs, marks, debenhams...when living in the UK that is.

mousie · 01/01/2005 08:32

ok, slightly off the theme - but is it really worth paying big bucks for a pair of jeans do you think? I am amazed at how much some brands cost, and have some friends who really rave about the wear they get out of their 100 quid plus jeans. this is a world I know nothing about, but a great pair of jeans that really really fitted would be priceless of course. anyone splashed out?

thank god there are some other second handers and boot sale buyers thought i was the only one!

blueteddy · 01/01/2005 09:50

I tend to buy things from FCUK,(in the sale!), warehouse, oasis & NEXT.
I buy going out clothes to try & kid myself that I may have a reason to wear them one day!
I mainly buy in the sales though.
FCUK have an amazing on line sale atm.

I love clothes shopping and I like to think I'm quite "trendy" although when I look through my wardrobe it's only basic stuff that I have.
Favourites have to be H&M, occasionaly Topshop and Matalan. My real problem is shoes! I can't get enough!

Gobbledigook · 01/01/2005 11:28

What's this Walliams business Barnsleygirl - d'you know there's a queue???

Gobbledigook · 01/01/2005 11:29

Re the jeans question - I don't buy expensive jeans, I buy Next ones and I've got a really nice Per Una pair that are identical to my friends Miss Sixty ones. I buy normal jeans because I don't think you can really tell the difference between cheap and expensive jeans, and buy more expensive (sometimes) where it shows, like tops and shoes.

I don't follow catwalk fashion or high street fashion in general (which is generally a watered down version of catwalk), mainly because I have discovered what shapes suit my bodyshape and I prefer to stick to them rather than stocking up on the latest trends. Plus the fact that most of the fashion stuff just seems to be tacky crap that will only be 'in' for 3 months before the next craze rears it's ugly head. God, I shound like a right old grandma

I tend to get stuff online. Debenhams, Topshop (for their basics such as jeans and knitwear), ummmmmmmmmmmm.... I'm a real fan of the plain v-neck t-shirts from Tesco for a fiver each. They are a great shape for me, wash well, and are a great price. I live in those .

Underwear comes from LaSenza and m&s, as they are pretty much the only places that won't charge the earth for a 'non-standard' size.

We-hey Socci - me too! Today I'm wearing a firetrap top and bench pants

I wonder if you can get any of it online?

Despite the fact that I buy these 'trendy' items I don't tend to go for 'high' fashion either, I'll go for what suits. I wouldn't be seen dead in one of those woolly ponchos - they look like old ladies' bed jackets to me, and I wouldn't wear cropped jeans with turn-ups either - they are far too 'Wham' for my liking

Apart from anything, I can't really afford to be changing my wardrobe as often as fashion dictates (and I wouldn't have the time to shop for it either) so I tend to buy more basic looking things that will last longer.

I must say I'm quite surprised at the number of people I've come across on here that buy second hand and in charity shops - I don't mean that in a bad way, just in that it's never really occurred to me to look in there - maybe I should!?

GoodKingWestCountryLass · 01/01/2005 22:25

Jeans are from Next, tops from Gap, shoes from Clarks. I really do not have the opportunity to clothes shop anymore so stick to where I know will have something taht suits.

I would love to wear funky skirts from Monsoon and shoes from Jones TBM and pick up bargains in the sales and the lieks of TK Maxx but it ain't happening here!

nikcola · 01/01/2005 22:34

FeastofStevenmom · 01/01/2005 22:46

I buy from Asda,Primark, Topshop, Baytrading, Dorothy Perkins, Pilot, Morgan. Basically anywhere I see something I like!

NameChangingMancMidlander · 02/01/2005 10:44

Socci, loads of places are opening in our home city that stock firetrap and bench etc stuff. There's that new place 'Bank' down by the Glasshouse restaraunt and where WH Smiths used to be. There's that shop facing the side entrance of Debenhams, next to the hot meat sandwiches place which sells designer gubbins (Crombie something ?). Jingo in Crowngate also sell that sort of stuff. Some of the surf shops sell diesel stuff, too, Reef in Crowngate sell Diesel stuff. Two Seasons, sell Bench stuff and of course the Quiksilver shop.

HTH !!!!!!

Quite a few of them are relatively new and a bit hidden away

newgirl · 03/01/2005 17:26

charity shops in posh areas are fantastic!! cashmere jumper for a fiver, jigsaw skirt for a tenner, velvet scarf for fiver, vintage black alpaca coat for £12. ok you have to rummage through some really ropey stuff but as its all for charity, dive in!! and if you bump in to your mates you can say you were just there for the fairtrade coffee.

bighug · 03/01/2005 20:01

Socci, your initial post rang a bell with me! I love my kids with all my heart, but I FANTASISE about a WHOLE DAY without them to go clothes shopping. It's just impossible when you have to subject them to a Mummy clothes shop session and believe me, I have tried. I have not resorted to online because I just have to try things on before I buy. They can look wonderful in the picture (or on the hanger) and then just awful on. When I do get a few hours at Bluewater (big mall in Kent), I go for John Lewis, M&S, Coast and sometimes Whistles for a bit of a treat.

zubb · 03/01/2005 20:06

I hate clothes shopping so only do it when there's a sale, or I need stuff. Did well last week from Next / Kew / Monsoon and White Stuff (is that a chain?), and I think the majority of my clothes come from those 4 shops, with some basics from Tescos.
Think I buy the same amount as I did pre-kids, but thats because I didn't buy much to start with.
