I can play the drums, but not the kind that comes in a drum kit!

TheArmadillo · 31/03/2008 16:35

I wouldn't buy a kit until you've had a few lessons.

biglips · 31/03/2008 16:36

so do you play the electric ones then?

No, I can play this kind and this kind

Dp is a drummer and teaches.he usually advises a few lessons before you buy anything as many people are shocked at how difficult it is and also he ahs ahd some pupils who didn't like the noise! An electronic kit is good for practice but quite expensive and not the 'real' thing Also a decent second hand kit is far superior to any of those beginners drums they are tinny and awful sound. If you see anything on ebay I can get dp to look at it and advise you.Where are you?

Find a rehearsal room near your home with a drum kit you can hire for an hour at a time and bash away there.

Find someone with their own kit who will give lessons.

You sometimes even find evening classes in kit drumming.

If you buy a kit it takes up a lot of space and you're limited in when you can play (assuming you have neighbours to consider!)

Try and have a good try-out elsewhere first.

i lived with a drummer(who taught drums as well as playing professionally) for 14 years....and in all that time i never managed to learn, it really is harder than it looks. You either have a natural ability with the drums or you don't.

i'd echo everyone elses comments, find somewhere to have a few lessons first to see if you have any ability at all, then if you do.... buy a second hand kit. New ones lose a huge chunk of their value the minute you've bought them, and 'entry level' kits generally sound rubbish and are not a pleasure to play. And never ever buy a kit without getting the advice of a good drummer first.......
