I'm curious to know around what age these things should take place.

Appreciate there is a sliding scale which I have gathered from google but curious to hear people's timelines, experiences, journeys.

DS turns 24 months when DC2 arrives and thinking of how to prepare and also not let things pass me by when I have 2:

  • graduate from sleeping bag to pillow and duvet
  • move from cot to toddler bed
  • out of highchair, booster seat next?
  • potty train
  • buggy... do we need a double, or can we use existing buggy for DC2 but buy a boogy board and keep DS in our travel buggy. What age do they stop needing buggy?!

By no means rushing into anything due to DC2 but need to plan for buying additional, thinking might rent in some cases.

  • Toddler bed Pillow and duvet around 15 months
  • We had a cot that converted to a toddler bed, we converted it just before 2 years old
  • High chair - at home she had her own little table and chair set she ate at from around 2. Also had a stokke tripp trapp which we used at the dining table, without the baby harness, from 2 isn. used high chairs at restaurants till 2.5 ish/when she could reach the table comfortably.
  • potty train we tried in the summer when she was 2 and stopped, then the spring when she’d just turned 3 and was successful. Wide window for this. Good idea to do in warm weather so you they can run round at home freely without a nappy on. Night training took longer - we did it 6 months or so later when she was waking up to go to the toilet and didnt have a wet nappy when she woke up.
  • stopped using a buggy a few months before she turned 3.

  • graduate from sleeping bag to pillow and duvet was around 12/13 months for pillow, and DD was still in sleeping bag while we introduced duvet as well as they don'g stay under the duvet
  • move from cot to toddler bed was around 3yo
  • out of highchair, booster seat next? 18 months
  • potty train 2.5yrs
  • buggy... do we need a double, or can we use existing buggy for DC2 but buy a boogy board and keep DS in our travel buggy. What age do they stop needing buggy?! we introduced scooter and balance bike from 2.5. But i would've still wanted buggy for both

We did most of those things around the time he was two. The sleeping bag we ditched for a duvet and pillow earlier, around 18 months.

He's 2.5 right now and we don't use the buggy for him unless we're doing a lot of walking (think a trip to the zoo or something). If it's less than half a mile, he walks it without the pram.

We haven't potty trained yet, but plan to try in the next month or so (he'll be 31 months).

Bed, duvet and no highchair was around 18 months for us.

Potty training was around 2 for one dc and 3.5 for the other, so bit of a range on that one.

Buggy wasn't used much past 2 for oldest, as we could just walk at his pace, but was closer to 3 for second as we needed to keep up with eldest and couldn't chase after two if they ran in different directions.

Graduate from sleeping bag to pillow and duvet - tbh I can't remember
Move from cot to toddler bed - around 2y6m
Out of highchair - we had one of those high chairs where you can remove the harness and use it as a chair, so we kept these until they were much older
Potty train - my DC were between 2y2m and 2y7m
Buggy... do we need a double, or can we use existing buggy for DC2 but buy a boogy board and keep DS in our travel buggy. What age do they stop needing buggy?! - I had a 22m age gap and I used a double buggy. My DC used a buggy until 3ish

Try not to overthink, be led by your own individual child not what anyone else is doing. There's no right age for all these things as it depends on the individual child and family.

These are just my anecdotes but it's not a 'right' way to do it...

  • DC1 was turning 3 when we swapped them from sleeping back to pillow and duvet as they were getting too small for the sleeping bag.
  • DC1 was 3.5 when we took the bars off their cotbed and replaced with a bedguard. At 4 we removed the bedguard.
  • DC1 was about 2.5 when they stopped using the high chair at home, but they still used it in cafes/their DGPs house etc until they were over 3. At home they just sat on a regular dining chair after that. DC2 is in a high chair still at 2.5 but just starting to sometimes ask to sit on a normal dining chair at home/other people's houses.
  • DC1 was easily potty trained at 26 months. DC2 is 30 months and not interested in using the potty at all yet although we are hoping to give it a good go in a few weeks time.
  • DC1 was still sometimes in a buggy until DC2 was born when they were 3 yrs 4 months, then they moved to buggy board where needed. But I don't drive so we did lots of very long walks.‌

  • graduate from sleeping bag to pillow and duvet  - around 12 months
  • move from cot to toddler bed - always in my and moved to a bed in their own room around 22 months
  • out of highchair, booster seat next? - around 1.5/2 as they no longer fitted, but I bought a chair with longer legs
  • potty train, 22 months for DD1 and 24 months for DD2. DD1 was over ready to train but DD2 was emotionally ready and desperate to use the potty but she wasn’t physically ready
  • buggy... do we need a double, or can we use existing buggy for DC2 but buy a boogy board and keep DS in our travel buggy. What age do they stop needing buggy?! - depends on how often you use it. If you drive every where usually then just a buggy board would be fine. I had a 3 year gap so didn’t get a double buggy.
