Thanks for everyone who responded to my earlier thread but still interested in thoughts/ recommendations by any evening posters.

Presently in central london but looking to move out. As DP can work from home we are very flexible, too much choice and therefore no idea where to look !!

We need:

  • Central London accessible by rail in 2 hours door to door
  • Major airport no more than 2 hours away
  • Good state schools ( primary & secondary )
  • 3/4 bed house no more than 300K
  • Large town / small city with loads for kids to do
  • Countryside easily accessible
  • Happy to go any direction though would prefer not to go east of london.

Any thoughts ?

why not kazzerooney?

May have been mentioned on other thread so appologies if repeating. We moved to Brighton 3 years today! Always celebrate it because it was the most fantastic move we have ever made. Pricey, but not as pricey as London, fantastic schools near us, great people. Can't fault it. Loads going on for kids. Try the Juicy Guide to Brighton if you can get hold of a copy. very helpful and made our mind up!

Kaz33 · 03/01/2005 19:34

I suppose I think of Salisbury as a bit sleepy and qutie a long way from anything. But then coming from central london anything will seem sleepy, not quite sure how I will handle not being able to walk to the 24 hour supermarket to buy a pint of milk.

Brighton is on our list of possibles and we will probably have a day trip to reacquaint ourselves with it.

Kaz33, I think Salisbury would be a shock coming from London. It's only about 36,000 people and living there's a bit like being in a Joanna Trollope novel (just imo Coddy, no offence!)

Tommy · 03/01/2005 19:41

I found working in Salisbury a shock and I only to travel 30 miles!

zubb · 03/01/2005 19:43

Salisbury has a 24 hour tescos, so you could walk there at a push - it's a bit out of town though.

iota · 03/01/2005 21:58

Kaz - we don't do WALKING in Milton Keynes - we are the City of the Car

BTW Tescos Express is open long hours (and most filling stations round here are 24 hrs, so no milk shortages

Kaz33 · 04/01/2005 07:58

Iota, I love walking

OP posts:
iota · 04/01/2005 15:04

Just kidding Kaz - we have loads of places to walk too - lakes, woods, Redways (home of the mugger)

BTW Judge Flounce says that you can't get a plumber in Cardiff, but we've got loads of them too in MK

bakedpotato · 04/01/2005 15:24

ooh, a fantasy thread. what about bristol?

bakedpotato · 04/01/2005 15:25

how weird, bristol thread has just appeared

beachyhead · 04/01/2005 16:07

I would go somewhere inland between chichester and portsmouth - close to the South Downs, seaside and good connections to London. Great shopping in Southampton, flights from Heathrow or Gatwick. Nigh on perfect......and I don't even live there.

Kaz33 · 04/01/2005 19:17

Beachyhead, we were thinking more a city or large town - bournemouth / poole.

As part of move out we are attacking the flat again to try and make it more saleable, DP not impressed when I suggested that we put the 21" telly in store. So far we have replaced lights in boys bedroom, tidied up some scruffy bits, put new hinges on the squeaky bathroom door. Later this week we are getting the carpets steam cleaned, next week we have man who does coming in to redecorate our bedroom and probably the living room.

Then flat back on the market for round two, then our fantasy can become reality

What about somewhere like Abergavenny? Never been there but I've got a lovely friend from there originally and she's moved back, sounds lovely (in Welsh accent).

JF - very keen on the idea of Cardiff, he has started leaving maps around the house open on that page...

iota · 05/01/2005 16:39

JF - no concrete cows - your loss - only that decrepit old castle. Here's a picture specially for you

BTW my in-laws live in Cardiff, so I know it quite well (not as well as dh though)

charleypops · 05/01/2005 17:22

We want to move too. In Surrey at the moment. Dp has to be in London a few days a month and often works in Dorset/Wiltshire. We've been looking at and around Bournemouth which seems lovely.

I'd like to find out more about what it's like to live in Bath - lovely houses there. I did read though that people there can be a bit cliquey and a lot of people who relocate there want to move away again within about 3 years (that info from the "knowhere" guide).

Ideally I'd have a smallholding - anyone know of where we could get one for no more more than £4k?

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 05/01/2005 18:35

charleypops, I lived in Bath years ago and did find it cliquey and quite difficult from a making friends point of view but I didn't have children then and didn't work in an office with lots of people, maybe I'd have liked it better if I had. I think having children makes it a lot easier to make friends.
