Relocation - where shall we move ?

Presently in central london but looking to move out. As DP can work from home we are very flexible, too much choice and therefore no idea where to look !!

We need:

  • Central London accessible by rail in 2 hours door to door
  • Major airport no more than 2 hours away
  • Good state schools ( primary & secondary )
  • 3/4 bed house no more than 300K
  • Large town / small city with loads for kids to do
  • Countryside easily accessible
  • Happy to go any direction though would prefer not to go east of london.

Any thoughts ?

hi dogwalking, commuting from Bristol means either the train via Newport or the Severn Bridge, both very busy routes. Cardiff itself and the towns and villages around it are really lovely. I'm sure the judge can recommend specific places better than I can. I particularly like Llandaff, very close to the city but villagey with great schools nearby. Good luck to you and Kaz with your moves.

Dorset? Lovely beaches and New Forest. Bournemouth International and Southampton airports close by. Bournemouth/Waterloo in 1hr 40. Good local schools. Nice 3/4 bed detached possible for £300K.

If you want to be near the IT industry then the M4 corridor is probably a good bet. A lot of IT companies based in Newbury/Reading/Bracknell etc. What about Hungerford?

DelGirlsRingAreYouListening · 28/12/2004 18:16

oh and lots of lovely mumsnetters too

Kaz33 · 28/12/2004 18:18

This is fab, thankyou so much for all your thoughts.

just read about jobs etc. JP Morgan (Chase Manhatten) is based here (Bournemouth) as well as a few other major finance/IT companies. Southampton is only 25 mins up the M27 and plenty there too as well as Salisbury.

Vickypollard · 28/12/2004 18:19

ahem.....lots of lovely MNers in Solihull & Surrounding toooooooo

Kittypickle · 28/12/2004 18:30

Another one for Dorset/Hampshire here - I totally agree with Delgirl, the MNetters are great The New Forest and beaches are brilliant to have on the doorstep and there is loads to do with children. dogwalkinginawinterwonderland, Cardiff is great (or was a few years ago when I did my degree and from what I can see it's even better with all the new developement there)

Need to move an 11 year old to a good high school, this is probably where we will start looking and then base ourselves within a reasonable distance, so, any ideas?

doggiewalker · 28/12/2004 18:39

and tell me more about Llandaff! It's not the first time I have heard this place mentioned.

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 28/12/2004 18:43

Doggiewalker, we were possibly going to move to the same area as you are thinking about (alas, the move fell through). Dh would have worked in Cwmbran and we were thinking of living in Bristol. The distance between the two was about 30 minutes, so Cardiff would be just as wuick I should think, though we never got to try it out in rush hour. Also, you would have to pay the Severn Bridge toll every day.

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 28/12/2004 18:44

Quick, not wuick!

Strange eh, I spent the first 4 years of my life in south wales / cwmbran / pontypool so am officially welsh

But must admit hadn't considered cardiff as a place to move. The more I read the more excited I get. We definitely want to live somewhere with a bit of life not a town/village near a city. Brighton, Bournemouth, Norwich, Cardiff, Solihull, High Wycombe, York, Milton Keynes all sound interesting ! In particular DP and I were talking about MK the other night.

Don't know how to CAT judgeflounce!

doggiewalker · 28/12/2004 19:30

and by the way, that would be great. One of dh's main worries is that it would be me, not the children, who would find it hard to make friends. Much easier when the children are tiny, you can go to NCT and the like.

Thanks Judgeflounce. It's helpful to know that there would be someone around who could help me get on my feet. How old are your children? Obviously the two 12 year old dd's (twins?) and a DS. Mine are 11 year old ds1 and 9 yr old ds2. 43 yr old dh and me . . well. . .

You're very brave! How old is DS? I'm almost 39, not at all worried about the big 4-0 (thus far anyway). Are you actually Welsh? and do the children know or have to learn Welsh at school?

Kaz33 · 28/12/2004 20:05
