Do you have a Blackberry? Does it put you under pressure to be on call constantly or is it a useful tool to stay of top of work?

What do we think? I've been offered one by work "to make my life easier" but is it a ruse to make you feel you can't switch off from work?

Every time the farking thing dingles he's right to it, because clearly the world will end if he doesn't read every email the very second it lands. I then get a blow by blow account of the email and exactly why it has pissed him off

I am going to turn it into BlackBerry jam, oh yes indeedy do

I have ishooes

I love mine but I cant get it to connect with my mac
actually it does make my life easier or should I say its easier to skive!

llareggub · 27/03/2008 22:10

I was addicted to mine and checked it all the time. The battery died and I was utterly bereft but DH insisted I go cold turkey. Three months later I have cracked the habit and feel much better for it.

DS has put it to much better use as a teething ring.

Just say no.

KbearAndHerSweetBippy · 27/03/2008 22:14

I think it's a no then!

I have one for work and I love it. It means that I can be in touch whenever I want to be and it is my choice to read and answer emails or leave them until office hours, if anything urgent comes up I can get a head start on it if I choose to and it means I don't have to spend ages catching up on emails when I get into work. It costs me nothing to surf the internet and nothing to send and receive emails so it is cheaper than using the phone or sending a text message. I could not advocate them more strongly in honesty.
Some people think that by having the facility to have instant access to your emails you are becoming a slave to them but I think the reverse is true, it puts you in control of when, where and how often you deal with them.

fingerwoman · 27/03/2008 22:25

ahh purpleparrot you obviously have something important that my dp is lacking
self-control lol

MirandaG · 27/03/2008 22:29

I work part-time so it is great for keeping an eye on things but I rarely respond to emails because it is so difficult to type. The best bit is sitting on the sofa on MN though . Also you can take pics of your kids and email them straightaway. D'you think I've got my priorities right?

KbearAndHerSweetBippy · 27/03/2008 22:32

ok, so the MNing on it is changing my mind....!!

ClairePO · 27/03/2008 22:35

Auto on and auto off. 10pm it switches itself off, back on at 7am. Off all weekend. You can easily power it back up if you are expecting something important.

As long as you are in control of it rather than the other way round it's fine.

EachPeachPearMum · 27/03/2008 23:13

I love mine! It was easier than sorting out the vpn access for my emails from work, and I returned from mat leave on a very fluid basis. I'm out and about a lot, so its just really useful.
I switch it off at weekends though.
