Best birthday present for a one year old??

My niece is one in a few weeks and I am really stuck on what to get her. There are so many toys in the house I don't want to add to that and a one year old is usually more interested in the wrapping paper I think.

What was the best present your DC got for their first birthday?

Money paid into her child trust account?

Depends how much you want to spend of course, but DS best 1 year present was Stacking cups. They don't take up much space when they are stacked inside each other.

Another which has stood the test of time was Treasury of Nursery Rhymes or somesuch, (we ended up with a few). I get bored with them, but now (7) he can read them himself.

If you are spending a bit more, money is good at any age. DS gets the odd fiver and twenty from relatives, and we just put it into his savings for the future.

My DS's favourite presents were drawing/painting things - crayons, aquadraw, etc. Plus books and clothes (although he was less excited by the clothes than I was!)

The little fold up pushchair from ELC. Think it is about £8. DD got one for her first birthday and still uses it several times a week at nearly 4. She wasn't quite walking at one but it was only a couple of months. It folds up small so doesn't take up much room and is portable to take to the park or whatever - DD has taken hers on the school run many times when we are dropping off/collecting DS.

We actually took the pushchair on holiday with us when we went by car.

Aquadraw is great. about £17, mess free drawing. folds up small. Not necessarily suitable at 12mo but mine used ours everyday from 15mo onwards.

a helium balloon in a box!

hours of fun dragging it round the house and pulling it down so it bangs on your head!

this from experience

Hi everyone. Thanks for all your suggestions and I will definately be bringing along that bottle of wine for the Mum! The helium balloon sounds such fun I might just get one for myself
